Does Anybody collect Civil War Tokens.

Here are two new ones for me… I won them at a local auction some time ago. I believe these are actually called store cards, but tokens will due.

I used to collect Civil War Tokens seriously a few years back, but had to sell most of my collection awhile ago so just admire them from the distance these days. I still have all the reference books and may start collecting them again at some point. There are two types of CWT's, store cards and patriotics. Yours are store cards, because they were issued by a commercial enterprise for advertising purposes (and to make change with). The patriotics have patriotic themes to them, but not advertising. It's a fascinating part of token collecting. I love your two pieces Rope. Congrats on the pick-ups.

I don't know if you have the Fuld reference on these or not, but if not, here are the designations Rope. The Cleveland piece is OH175C-1a (this one is a R-2 and common). The New York token is listed as NY630Z-1a and an R-1 and so very common. Still very nice historic tokens. :thumb:

Yes , those are quite common , although very worthy of any " Token " enthusiast's collection. Thanks for sharing .

 

I collect the patriotic's plus all the non-confederate fractional currency of the Civil War. I would guess I have about thirty coins and just two short of completion on the fractional currency. I always check eBay and coin shows for something new. I have noticed the prices have gone up the last several years. But what hasn't. I always try to buy the tokens in the AU grade but I am less restrictive on the currency. I have picked up some Alaskan tokens as well. The only store cards I look for are those from Illinois because it's my home state.

FUN … I also was born in Illinois, ended up a Packer backer.

 

The 2 tokens shown were from a mixed lot, which included some junk silver, at a local auction. So it’s hard to figure individual cost. But I tell myself I got a deal.

 

I like looking at the civil war tokens, but only have one. I found it metal detecting, if I remember correctly. I've attached it, it's in terrible shape. Just plain gross, actually. You can sort of see the headress and outline, and the reverse appears identical.

 

There was an updated edition (5th) of Fuld's patriotic book issued by the Civil War Token Society in 2005. I know they're also working on a revision of the store card book, also by the Fuld's. The last one dates back to 1975, so is way out of date. I think they're pretty far along on this one, so you may see the new book this year or shortly after.

I have several friends that are Packer backers. Once the Bears were out of it, I quietly switched to the Packers since I wanted the NFL Championship to go to a NFL Central team. I think we have the toughest division around, hence the name "black and blue". With other names like Lombardi and Halas in our history, along with all the strong rivalry's and tradition, there is no better place for Championship to reside. Thanks to the pack for keeping it in the Midwest. However, next year we will even the score. It won't even be close. :>)

I like CWT's and collect them when I see one I like. I like the patriotics and try to find store cards from specific cities. For the most part they're still very inexpensive considering the history they represent.
