Does anybody have any idea whether this is worth anything? My first thoughts are that if you aren't from Jackson, MI, then no, probably not worth much. But you never know, it could have a Republican angle too. Jackson Centennial Medal Obv (small).jpg Jackson Centennial Medal Rev (small).jpg Jackson Centennial Medal Text.jpg
My great grandfather had it. There must have been a gathering of some sort where they gave these out.
The back side is a bit blurry, but the text is:

    1858 1929
    Jackson, MI
    Here, under the Oaks
    July 6th, 1854 was born
    The Republican Party
Destined in the throws of civil strife
    to abolish slavery vindicate Democracy
    and perpetuate the Union

I have no idea what it is worth, but one of the members of the NGC forums collects political memorabilia such as this.

I live nearby Jackson. I see these from time to time at local auctions and antique shops. You can normally find them for around $15-$20. From what I know, you have the history correct. It was for a centennial celebration of Jackson in 1929.

Well, that's good to know. Where abouts are you? I'm in Belleville. Go to any coin shops around jackson? I used to go into Peterson's now and again.

dcure2002 is correct, the medal does commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Jackson Michigan. The 1854 founding of the Republican Party is also noted. The value of your medal may be a bit more that noted above due to having the ribbon attached. I too live near Jackson, about 1 mile from the city limits.

Roger doesn't have much in coins any more. Occasionally he will come across interesting items. Earlier this year I picked up a set of Canadian Large Cents from him.

My Mother's family was from Jackson, MI. Believe it or not, they made a pretty good income from oil through the late '70s. They had about 1,000 acres with little Marathon pumps all over.

They let dirt bikes race on the property. I drove my first car there (volkswagon bug) sitting on my uncle's lap when I was five...good memories!

I recall some place near there called the "Cascades" (I think). It was some kind of man-made waterfall lit up with all sorts of colored lights...I doubt it's there anymore.

I would love to pick up a medal like that for $15-$20.
