Ok i am going through some Coins and came across a 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar .The Mint strike "O" seems to have a knotch on the right side of the "O" .i used my 18x minimag and it looks like when it stamped the Mint mark that it made additional mark to the right middle of the "O" ..My questions is .Is there such a Morgan listed with this type of error ? or could this just be?..Thank you
We'd need close-ups, but it might be a repunched mintmark (O/O). It's called a VAM on Morgan & Peace dollars. It's an acronym for the authors of the book on these dollar varieties, Leroy Van Allen & A. George Mallis. You can look through the listings at VAMWorld and compare yours with the photos of the "O/O" mintmarks. http://www.vamworld.com/1883-O+VAMs Chris
I just happen to have an 1883 O/O in an NGC MS64 slab, and this is what it should look like. Note that in addition to the RPM, there is also a small die gouge, inside left of the mintmark. Chris PS. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge it.
