I've had this medal on my desk for some time, just waiting to get an insight. I've looked for this thing repeatedly with no luck. I keep reading the letters at the top as USPO, United States Post Office. But this would require reading from left to right, then bottom to top. Is it USOP? The legend says ASMIE NO. 186, NEW HAVEN, CONN. There is a volcano (?) behind the letters on top. Is the X in the center important?

My daughter saw this and she asked me. I don't know. She took it and started Googling all kinds of things. She says, I think I can figure this out. So cute. After a bunch of failure by both of us, I decided to scan and post. Just as I scanned, she said she was bored. She went outside to play. Help me here, I'd love to get this for her (and me).

I found nothing for UPSO, so I'm going with UOPS. A few possibilities.

That looks like a mail carriers badge from the New Haven, Conn. post office, the wearer was number 186.

    United States Patent Office?

    University Student Political Organization?

    American Society Measuring Instruments Engineer?

I live in CT and you got me. Why don't you try and send a scan of this to the New Haven CT Historical Society. They may have something in their archives. Good luck with it. My guesses are probably long shots.

I will take a wild guess that it is a union button tag worn by a mechanical engineer (HVAC) member of the United States Organization of Pipefitters (Plumbers) local 186. I haven't matched the logo yet, but the volcano suggests to me the wearer built and installed heating ducts, because years ago they didn't use Air conditioning that much around New Haven. It could have been something issued by the union local, the heating contractor or even a 10 year pin ?? But if I were to conduct an extensive search, I would start with that.

I will give you a couple different answers.
New Haven - i think of Yale.
ASMIE - American Society of Mechanical and Industrial Engineers
USOP - United States Occupied Philippines.

    second thought

    How about ASMIE
American Society of Manufacturing Industrial Engineers nuther long shot.

By The way yes we have Yale, We also have Albertus Magnus, Sounthern CT, University of New Haven and Gateway community college. May have missed one here.

Plumbers and Pipefitters local is not in New Haven they are in Meriden and Wallingford CT Local 777

I Think Plumbers and Pipefitters local 186 is in Pennsylvania.

I find it interesting that the "U" and "O" are a smaller font than the "P" and "S" and of course the "X". Looks more like a ribbon type award to me. The AAAS ( American Association for Advancement of Science ) used to have a "Annual Meeting and Science Innovation Exposition" they abbreviated as AMSIE, but I no longer am a member and donated all old journals to the Library when I retired and I suspect they never had 186 of them.

How long have you had it and how was it acquired? This may offer more clues.

It looks much like a watch fob. The general style appears to be from the 20's or 30's, which would be the era when pocket watch fobs were popular. The abbreviation CONN. would at least place it prior to 1963 when state abbreviations were officially changed to two-letter pairs (CT). I would read the "X" as a Roman numeral. The four letters round the edge would normally be read top to bottom and left to right; here they would be either OUSP or USOP, or possibly OPUS, each with the US likely meaning United States. The ASMIE NO.186 seems to be an acronym for an orginazition, with at least 186 branches or groups, this one in New Haven. The symbolism of the volcano has meant solidity or adherence to ones principles.

I couldn't find any references to organizations with acronyms of OUSP, USOP, OPUS, or ASIME. I'd suggest you contact these guys http://www.watchfob.com/ for help.

Maybe that union represented many trades ? Not many years ago the painters were represented by the Carpenters in Las Vegas.

A few times, trades mix together to keep the administrative costs down, maybe that'd s place to look ?

I don't know if it was a button tag. A button tag should have a keyhole shape at the top, and your medallion is flat. I am still doing a bit of research also. If we don't find it, at least you came to the bunch of guys who will give it a good try.

I am sure others are looking in different directions, just in case we are off the mark.

And you wonder why this has been sitting on my desk! I got this about a year ago in a really mixed junk box that was assembled by people selling stuff to a dealer in FL who then throws anything in a box that they don't know what to do with.

The first thing I Googled was "American Society of Mechanical and Industrial Engineers", but the only site that was even close was the "American Society of Mechanical Engineers". It's just a shot in the dark, but why don't you contact ASME and ask if they might know what it represents?
