I did a litmus test with nickels today. I got $60 in bank-wrapped rolls and $40 in customer-wrapped rolls. For the first time in a while, I found no Buffalo or War nickels, but I did find over twice as many early Jeffersons in the bank-wrapped rolls (25) vs the CWR (10).

I think for cents, dimes, and quarters, I will do CWR and nickels will be boxes only.

Asking a cashier about their change is a good idea haha. I may have to know them to do that. I know when I was a cashier I kept all the wheats I saw, but wasn't into coin collecting at the time.

I was just reading a bit farther back on this thread and I see people talking about getting Ikes. I'm just wondering what the purpose to this is.

Some people hope to find proofs, 40% silver Ikes or, if they're lucky, an old silver dollar will be mixed in (usually a Morgan or Peace dollar).

Then it's also just putting together a set. Which I like to do.

Not so much here in Las Vegas. Most casinos have coinless multidenominational slots. Change girls are a thing of the past. Although nearly ever slot repairman wears a change apron, they only carry currency.

Halves are still used in some table games. I just got a "toke roll" (tips given to a dealer they cashed in) and it was just another awful 20 coins. lol I only took them because my bank teller saved them for me. lol

People mark them with permanent marker. There were so many different marks, that I knew right away that there wouldn't be any silver. I do about 8-12 boxes of halves a week, and just looking at the top of the rolls will give me a good idea if you have a shot at any silver.

Boxes in this area are getting very difficult to find silver.

I have yet to find boxes of coin at a bank. All I ever find are bags, CWR, BWR. Only one bank I go to will sell me bags. The rest just have single rolls and I have to bring my own method to carry them out.

What type of banks are you guys/gals havin better luck with getting boxes?

Finally finished - went through roughly 380-400 value of rolls and lose coins. This is my first time so I have no idea if I did decent or not. I got one full roll of 1776-1976 bicentennial coins - I am not sure if they are just super 'new' and shiny or if they are actually proof coins (I am still learning, sorry). I was also able to find 18 coins from 1967 to 1969 (I believe they are 40%) all jfk's. Hopefully this is a good start!

I opened the 2nd box......what a nice day for silver for me.

Between the first box and one bank stop I had found 6 40%ers and 5 90%ers including a Frankie. On Box 2 I found 14 more silver halves and some other keepers:
1 1997 100 Colones coin from Costa Rica
    1 2002 S Proof
    1 1994 S Proof
    1 1976 S Proof Silver
    9 40%ers
    2 1964s
    1 1963 Franklin
    1 1941 Walker

    :D

Now that was a good day!!!!

What part of jersey? I'm in Jersey City and I called so many banks in Hudson County and have not found any CWR i think being in an urban area is not a good thing for this hobby.

BTW i notice a lot of people posting saying the tellers can't buy from their own tray which I find odd because I was a teller around 10 years ago and i had done it. I just called over the head teller and she watched me replace the coins. Only thing was I wasn't informed about the silver content of coins but if it was old I took it. My only findings at the bank were a 1942 Booker T Washington Com, around 14 mercury dimes, and one 1926 Federal Reserve of New York $100 bill. I do remember we had $1000 of half dollars in the vault and it kills me that I'll never know what was in it, some guy came in and bought them and i remember thinking wtf is this guy going to do with all those half dollars. Now i know........

LOL ! Look, this is the urban legand that ALWAYS happens. It's like a sign in a bar that says "Free Beer Tomorrow". Really old to most bank tellers means "beat up and ugly looking" or in old wrappers. I picked up a few rolls a while back and someone had written "Walkers" on the paper. I couldn't believe my luck. But, alas, they were beat up Kennedys 71-2001. So I wouldn't dwell on it too much. More likely they get a kick out of saying that to every "rube" from out of town who comes in and asks for halves. Be a good joke at coffee break.

"Man, did you see the look on that guys face ?" lol Sort of thing. Locals always seem to find a way to liven things up a but when an "out of towner" is around. They were just messin with ya. IMHO

    gary.

OK, i finished up 10 Boxes of Half Dollars, and the result was pretty gloomy.

    1 1965 Half 40%
    2 1968 Half's 40%

Kind of a waste of time, but i guess that happens sometimes. We like to get lots of boxes, as it seems every time we just get a few they end up being good boxes and we wished we would have gotten more.

This time however we searched 10,000 half dollars and only scored 3 40%'s

Oh well, im still not giving up. Next time will most likely be better.

    Good luck to everyone else.

You do 10 boxes at a time, a guy previously did 15........many others do 10-15 at a time. How long before you figure the banks and suppliers just keep rotating this many halves?
