Thats only true if what you say is mis-informing, incorrect, or the like. In this case, it's not. Everyone knows SGS is crap and their grades are not remotely accurate based on any of the grading standards in practice anywhere. ABON has threatened suits but has never gone through with one because they know they would lose. Grading is subjective, but only so far. If I find a cent in the gutter that looks like it's been run over 3,000 times and claim it's MS-65, who do I think I'm really kidding other than those who may not know better? Thats not subjective...thats dishonesty and fraud. Thats SGS.

For those who don't know I feel it would be wrong not to let them in on
what the facts are or at least give them an educated opinion ... based on true experience and not hear say

Sorry to hear you got taken like that. Chalk it up to a lesson learned and don't give up on the hobby because of it. We've all been there. Glad you found this forum and shared your experience.

I knew about bogus SGS slabs ,,A few years ago someone gave me about 50 of them and told take them out of the case or there just junk
something about a made up company and never buy them ...

The name Abon was new to me
    and there deceiving ways
I'm somewhat new to collecting as far as surpassing 1000 coins or so
been a novice for some time

Once my daughter took interest the collecting expanded and I started buying
Better coins I guess you'd say and more of them
    Became a little more serious

To this day I still prefer coins that are not slabbed , maybe that will change in time as the hobby matures ?
but to hold the coin pass it to my little girls hands and discuss its history ...
The challenge of grading it ,, put under a digital microscope and look at its finest details and imperfections
That is what makes it all worth while to me

    hey if it's worth a few bucks ,, that's just a bonus

65, the edge in sunken in, rare and more valuable PMD for sure, and look at that toning.

btw, that really was a SGS slab, with a ms70 1976 D quarter with "evenTly" toning (evenTly) got its for a couple bucks, plus S&H. It was full of cat hair too.

Buy the coin and not the holder people. :) Plenty o' folks have picked up some great deals with these holders. Just gotta know watcha be lookin' at........

As long as you realize that "or the like" can simply mean that the person you are speaking of does not like what you said. He doesn't have to win, just file the suit, cost you thousands or tens of thousands in legal fees answering the charges, and then he drops the suit. He doesn't "win", but you lose. Those of us who have been around for a few years saw it happen here in the numismatic community about three or four years ago.

I was here during that time. But they'd be wasting just as much money on a lawsuit they know they couldn't win as well. Everyone would lose money, but their name would be tarnished all the more, if thats possible.

Trouble is, this guys got deep pockets and most of "us" don't. He could inflict the hurt on an individual and walk away unscathed. A few thousand to him is chicken feed but not to most individuals on this forum.

Some truth here. I picked up a silver commem for a frog hair above melt...graded PR70 of course. It was before I learned that they grade almost everything a "70", but I would have bought it anyway.

I don't believe anybody mentioned that they don't really grade coins, they slab their own coins then sell them. Not 3rd party.

Going back to the sgs ms65 Ike dollar a couple pages back, even not being labled as a type two, that amazes me it came back ms64, I would have expected an AU coin.

Ok we know They SGS know nothing about coins other then to decieve and make money ..
Someone posted look at the coin not the label..
These nitwits put mostly junk in slabs .. don't even know when there holding a "good" one
So the chances of getting a GOOD DEAL or coin is a lot less likely then getting Misled ..
looking at "THE COIN" on ebay is not a good way Certainly for Novice's .. also pro's alike

Especially if your gettin the Ole' bait and switch Like I feel I was with Kennedy Set / Franklin Set / Ike set /Susan B set /
all Pictures looked good New or like new coins , But even Stevie Wonder could see coins pictured were not to ones I got ... not even close .........
and there were NO slabs involved ,, just no "Luster" :) worn out , obiviously well circulated Damaged coins .. Ebay Pay Pal or other online seller were no help

At least if I bought there Slab Scrap I would have had a close to Uncirculated Appearing coin ...
See if you think your buying a 500 dollar coin for 50.00 at it's all its really worth ? thats your own fault that led you to them for taking the Gamble
" You Get What You Pay For "
But if you bought something Pictured and described Fixed priced according and get something not even close
I think its a different deal all together with .. Misled but in different directions ??
