1937 GOVERNMENT TRIBUTE CAMEO PROOF SET COIN LOT RARE He's got several other "tribute proof sets" listed. Nowhere in the listing does the word "copy" or "reproduction" appear; if I squint just right, I can imagine that the penny is stamped "COPY", but it's hard to see in the images. The last straw: It's listed in the "proof sets" category, not "reproductions". He has negative feedback from more than one buyer who's been taken in. I reported three of his auctions just now. Anybody else want to join in?
Ebay should setup a seperate catagory for Copy & Replica coins. They don't belong with genuine coins at all. The should state that if copies and replicas are found in the genuine coin cat. they will be banned from posting items.
+1! There is a lot of eBay hate on this site, that being said, this is a VALID point! Excellent Idea, Judd! Steve
There already is one. Problem is, there isn't any way to make a search in the "coins" category exclude items from the "replicas" subcategory. I wish they'd knock it into a different hierarchy completely, but I'm sure they won't. This guy's auctions are not in the Replicas category, but in the Proof Sets category. It's "improper category" at the very least.
I agree with you completely. It's a fraud with intent to mislead. BUT I have been told (on this forum) that lack of information within an auction is not misleading. You will have SELLERS here that agree with this seller.
Without splitting hairs, this is not just withholding information. It is making an explicit false statement, by listing this as a Proof Set, not a Replica.
Holy Crap.. It says TRIBUTE set right on the listing. I have NO problem with this listing. Are you folks concerned with ripping off Newbies? Steve Is the "Tribute" 1947 Red Book a ripoff to Red Book Collectors?
I think it would depend on the definition of "Proof" and not just the US Mint definition of proof. "Proof Set" is not trademarked nor copyrighted. And it is a proof set of TRIBUTE coins. And as you say "not to split hairs", but I can see the word "copy" on the half, penny, quarter and nickel. But remember, I AM agreeing with you as i believe the auction is deceiving. I just think it is more of a "lack of information" than a false statement.
That is NOT what I said. Read the post instead of just highlighting it. You can read into it what ever you want, just don't suggest I support ripping off newbies. Steve
I went to see a beatles "tribute" band. I wasn't expecting to see the real Beatles. The band name was not misleading.
Sorry, I'm not going to let the seller off because of the term "Tribute". It's ambiguous, a weasel word, a euphemism for the key words "copy" and "reproduction" -- which, if the seller weren't trying to "deceive newbies", he should have included in the description (or the title). Why is the seller avoiding those terms, which almost every other reproduction auction includes? And, again, these are listed in the "Proof Set" category, not the "Reproductions" category. Why is the seller listing this auction in a real-coins category, instead of where it belongs? I wouldn't expect eBay to boot him, but I would expect them to tell him "cut it out". And remove the auctions.
