Just purchased this 1903S and wanted to get your opinions on it and do you think PCGS would slab and grade it ok?

It would have to grade VF or better to make it worthwhile for slabbing, and I just don't see that happening.

I think the grade of VF is stretching it a bit.

With an estimated survival rate of only 124,015 in all grades, every one should be protective in one form or another. Remember that we are nothing more then caretakers of these little gems and should preserve them so that some youngster in the year 3124 can enjoy them...
I have one in VG10 and keep it in an Air-Tite, along with all my Morgans. In any grade the 1903-S is a beautiful and unforgettable coin that stands on it's own like the 1889-CC...

I thought it was a pretty good deal and a decent grade for the coin. Then again thats why I always buy PCGS or NGC Morgans because they are tough for me to buy raw. But this date is one of those that you have to make a decision on since most that are slabbed are out of my price range so maybe I have made a good purchase.

You got it!!! Reason why I buy mine raw! Just got a 1901-O, and paid MS60 for a MS64+ coin......
btw: I only paid 33 bucks for my VG10, so there is deals to be had. None the less the supply on this coin is next to nothing, so the price will continue to rise as interest in Morgans goes off the hook - especially in the last couple of years!
btw2: The grade looks close in the picture, but like said above you really need to get it in hand, and use PCGS photograde or something to get a good idea...

I don't encourage anyone to buy raw coins unless you can see it in hand, first, or in the case of an eBay purchase, the seller is known, has a good record and is amenable to returns without question. It is too easy for a seller to pawn off a problem coin, and then make your life difficult over a return. Even with a return privilege, you can still be out the shipping and insurance costs.

I still don't recommend submitting this 1903-S for grading unless you are a paid member who can submit it as one of the freebies.

I'd agree with the grade on the flip. It looks to be VF20. I probably wouldn't get it slabbed.

I agree cpm9ball. I feel comfortable with the site I purchased it from as I have had several happy purchases with them in the past but I understand what your saying perfectly. I am not a member yet but plan on joining soon as I have a few coins to send in for grading other than the one above.

I hear the best way is to submit at a coin show or something. When you add the shipping insurance PCGS doesn't make it cheap to submit. Have you thought about ANACS? They have the best value with grading, and you don't need a membership!

You could also slab it yourself with a coin world slab. I decided to do all my bronze medals including the First Spouse series this way. I created the labels using MS Publisher, and printed them on matte photo paper... Coin-World slabs only cost $1.25 - $1.50 each in bulk and fit any storage box or lighthouse page a PCGS slab fits. The grade is for me, and if you plan on selling them than I would keep it basic like MS or BU as the grade...

BTW: Thanks for the compliment, it's a 610-2 Lew Horton. It's about as rare as a 1903-S, being they only made 300...

I bought one at a coin show in November of last year for $60. It was nicer than the one above; I'm thinking EF40. I would probably go up to VF20 on the pictured coin at the best. It is definately not a slabber.
