They were just saying on the flip, "if" this were an 1853-O it would be a $135K coin, not that this is one, they was just saying. I'd put my money that's it is a 1858-0 that has a weak readable date that may look like a 3 but if you can see the 5 and it's not slanting...it's no 53-O Also the weight for those two years is different, but human nature wants to believe it's a rare coin and are hyping that fact. Most time when uber rare coins show up, the person presenting the rarity has no idea, they are asking, not presenting. Yes a rare coin that is worn but readable still has lots of value, take for example circulated 1909-S VDB cents; or 37-D 3-Leggers. Even well worn they still pull premiums.
Although the "No Arrows" is 0.92 grams heavier, I doubt that would be a useful diagnostic for a coin this worn. Too bad the last two digits are covered up by that sticker.
The 2x2 cardboard holder says it all. It states $135K. The yellow dot blocks the date and who wouldn't have this coin authenticated and graded to get the true value of a rarity such as this. I also, believe this is probably an 1858 O and the date is so worn down it is unreadable. I also believe the seller knows what he's trying to pass off as a rarity. Shame on him for showing his dishonestly in such an obvious way. Where's his integrity? Bruce
1853 half dollar Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and just happened to find it while looking for information about a coin that I have in my collection. I've been an ametuer collector for about 40 years and have a coin that I can't find any information about. It's an 1853 half dollar with no mint mark and no arrows and rays. I know that the 1853 o with no arrows and rays is valuable, but mine has no mint mark, so I don't understand why someone would remove the arrows and rays. If they did, they did an excellent job. Any ideas on what I might have here? Is it a worthless piece of junk or could I have something valuable? I scanned the coin and tried posting pictures but it's not working, it's just coming up as a little box with a red x in it so I'm obviously doing something wrong. I could email pictures if anyone is interested in checking it out. Thanks!
Hmmmm... If the seller knows the coin is worth 135k, as shown on the 2x2, would they really honor the auction that ended at 150 bux? I don't care how ethical an eBay'er you are, you WILL sacrifice your account to cancel that sale!
Tom me, it looks like the rays where taken off. There is discoloration of the metal like its been tooled or something there.
I was sort of thinking the same thing about the reverse fields around the eagle and the obverse area around the date. The discoloration seems too specific. OH and by the way welcome rfasoccermom !
Let's see.....date covered by sticker, holder says weak date, it's in a 2x2 even though the seller "knows" it's worth 135k, and instead of taking it to a place like heritage, they use eBay.
