This coin sure is hard to capture well. Perhaps my lighting is just a bit off. Here is the best I can do at the moment. Check out the S, what causes that?

The "s" for this particular issue is known for being flatly struck. Quite common. Check out mine.

Simms: The pics are getting better if not still a bit too bright, but I'm still hovering around the 50/53 grade. Now I'm concerned about that spot or two, dark/green color on the top reverse between the "I-F" of California. Indeed the rough surface around the devices on that top edge bothers me to go any higher. The strike doesn't seem to uncommon for classic commems but isn't the worse I've seen either.

Simms - I think your San Diego looks AU53 and that's what I believe NGC or PCGS would grade it.

And your photos are getting better! :D

Thanks everyone, I can't wait to pick up my next one and hone my picture skills. I think I'll search for a MS-60 or so Texas. Lets see some more beautiful commems!

I'm totally with you guys about slowly trying to put together a type set. I'm already dreading trying to pay for the Hawaii and Spanish Trail.
My wife doesn't appreciate coins and hates it when I spend $100+ on a coin, forget $1500.

The scratches above the eagle are on the holder not the coin. And here's the reverse of my new Oregon Trail

I tell ya I love the Oregon. I know it is not as rare as the others but man that is a beautiful coin. I ended buying two of them accidentally but can't bring my self to sell one.

And I'm really hoping to hold out for a Monroe where I can really see the reverse. I think the design of that reverse is very interesting.

Picked this up today.Really wanted the 1921 - the shop had one but somebody cleaned and scratched it badly. I'm happy with the way it worked out b/c I like the toning on the waves.

That is a nice looking pilgrim. I love the detail they put on the ships on these early commems.
