I agree I see 100's of those daily and something about that very year is just ugly, maybe the designer was drunk?
I think of the Columbia as the first "clip art" coin -- drop in a couple of buildings (from different centuries no less), a statue, and a palmetto tree that has wrong shaped leaves. Add in the "rings within rings" design feature on both sides of the coin for good measure. Along with the York and Rhode Island commemoratives, it has all the hallmarks of a slapdash effort done to take advantage of the 1936 bubble. I find the RFK commemorative to be merely homely, and the satin finish was a nice change at the time. When it comes to depicting real people I'm willing to give the coin designer some slack. It's not like they get to choose what the subject actually looked like. So even though I'd rather not have "real people" on circulating coins, I decided to go with coins where the designer had more creative control and still came up short.
My least favorite would have to be...Stinkin' Barbers. The special olympic commemorative is next but my favorite is the Dolly Madison commemorative...Mmmmmmmmmm.
Well here is a depression era American tax token. Its plastic, hideous, no inspirational value, a stinking sales tax coin. Without a doubt this is the worst American coinage ever made !!!!:foot-mouth:
Update my least favorite coin is ANY COIN IN AN SGS HOLDER! Are there any SGS or IBC coins that are not graded MS-70?
I always thought the SBA was the dumbest coin ever. Why make a coin that is worth more than a coin that contains less of the same amount of metal (a 1979 half dollar has alot more of the same metal than a 1979 dollar).
AAAAHHHHHH!! It's like when you look through a peep-hole and someone has their eye pressed against the other side...
Ugliest British coin? Really? Even compared to the Churchill crown? I think all of the usual suspect US coins have been mentioned, although believe it or not, the Chain Cent is actually quite nice in high grades. Unfortunately, most of us can't afford one in the grade. I'll also cast a vote for anything featuring Leopold the Hogmouth... although to be fair he really did look like he is portrayed on his coinage.
Ahhh! That's like a stab to the lungs! My least favorite design is any coin WITHOUT dentils! No seriously, the SBA takes the cake.
Ugly choice would be the new shield penny.. They could have at least shaped it more traditional.. It’s almost shaped like a heart now.. I could have been beautiful
I'm not a fan of the Olympic commemoratives. A close second and third is the SBA and Ike dollars...the reverse isn't terrible, it's the obv that just doesn't do anything for me. Although I collected both so I have all U.S. coinage -LTB
Looking through them, they WILL take the cake. No contest. Those are awful. I mean really? Couldn't they have at least put the towers on ONE of the choices? Geez. Looks like they are trying to mint a "Remember Ancient Greek" coin. Other than those, the new Jefferson nickels ('05 and later) as well as the SBA's.
i agree, i have the 05 p and d regular then someone gold plated 2 more for a set of four, i bought em for 2 bucks , but they are ugly
