Hi everyone, I have a 1898 Zs peso that seems to have a weird obverse-reverse orientation. I only have one copy of the coin, so I don't have anything to really compare it with. Anyway, the two sides seem to be oriented at a degree angle between 75-90 degrees from medal orientation. I hope I loaded them correctly, but I can't really tell, since the photos look a lot more washed out than when I took them. Basically, the cap side top is facing 11:45 and the Quetzal top is facing 2:30 or so. My questions: What is the "normal" orientation for this coin type? Given how ugly the condition is, would it be worth getting graded to verify the orientation?
Looks like a simple die rotation error. 1898 was a transition year at Zacatecas for many years they were minting the 8 reales coin there. I do not think its worth having it graded by a top TPG. But its a keeper for sure for any collector of Mexican Liberty cap 8 reales/ 1 peso silver coins.https://picasaweb.google.com/Ripley44mag/CentralAmericaSouthAmericaMexicoCaribbean?locked=true#5457564902683622370
The normal orientation for this coin is the same as with most coins, the reverse being upside down compared with the obverse. I just checked a couple of my Mexico Un Pesos from that era, and they all have that orientation.
