N. Carolina Quarter Major Die Crack? I was going through my change bucket and found this N.C. quarter. I'm thinking it is a die crack but it is really long and there is alot of scratchs on it. So please let me know what you think... P.S. I know the title posting has a spelling error and i tried to fix it but it won't show up on the forum page...
I thought those same things too. But when i looked closer the line was slightly raised. Also The obverse side is in good condition.
Die cracks normally go through the path of least resistance, not in straight lines. But it does look like one. Weird.
That is a awesome die gouge .. At least that is what I would call it. If the right person had found some of these and hyped up a good nickname for them they would sell for hundreds for a while until everyone learned it was just a die gouge. Anyone remember the speared bison and the extra leaf quarters? Funny how one coin with tiny die gouges can be worth more than other coins with heavy and easy to see die gouges . Looks like it has all to do with who finds the coins and how much they hype them up. I have a few 2005 P mint bison coins that have a much better die gouge than the D mint so called speared bison coins and sold one on Ebay 3 years ago and it only sold for around 80.00 so i said to the heck with it.
Probably not a gouge since it goes through the high points of the letters. Could it be struck through wire? Or some type of plating error?
