I was in the coin store today and wanted to buy some holders like this, but they said that they do not sell them because they damage the coins. Even when the coins are in the mylar 2x2's Is this true? I love these holders and they are great for keeping my coins organized. If so what are alternatives.
When coins are in their 2x2's, these sheets are not dangerous. The sheets are dangerous, however, when they are loose in the sheets (if the sheet brand contains PVC, that is.)
From what I've heard, even in 2x2s, these can cause some damage (toning) over extended periods of storage if in PVC pages. You can find out if the page contains PVC if it has thatdistinct PVC smell (like a new shower curtain).
Unfortunately, manufacturers can use titles which give false safety. I searched and found several that use the term "Safe" in them may be made of vinyl. Coins will have more protection in 2x2 while in the pocket, even of vinyl. I am sure many old timers can verify decades of storage without damage, but, localities will vary. The additives that are added to PVC to allow flexibility cause the problems. In these days, the best pocket pages are those vinyl free. Here is one example of acid free polypropylene pages. Polyethylene sheets are safe, but are often rather flimsy for heavier coins and are more useful for sports cards. http://www.amazon.com/BCW-Pro-20-Pocket-Page-100/dp/B000IKFWP0 Jim
I do not think that there are problems and damages even in Mylar 2x2's . Give me a justification why there is any harm for . I am not agreed .
There aren't any problems with the vinyl binder pages as long as you use the mylar flips too, I use them all the time. The only problem with them is that some coins will tone, so if you don't like a nice toning possibly happening, then don't use them. The plastic flips that will ruin your coins imho are these. If you have any, place a coin in one for a couple days and check it out, the coin will feel really nasty to the touch. If you check it out, be sure and use a coin you don't care about.
One rule you can follow is if it smell's like a new shower curtain in contains PVC. That doesn't mean if it doesn't smell like a shower curtain that its safe.
It could be the brand of pages you're using, maybe it's an older brand. I have never had a problem with mine but the coin shop I go to has gone out of they're way to get rid of old stock and they too are very careful on what they sell. just a thought
