I found this 1985 half dollar coin wrapped in cloth along with some other very shiny coins in a tin can about 4 inches down at my park using my metal detector im guessing it was some sort of time capsule . Pretty cool but i wish they would have left a note.
It is a proof Kennedy as indicated by the San Francisco (S) mintmark. Proof coins are struck on highly polished planchets which give the fields a mirror-like quality contrasted by the cameo effect on the devices. It appears that it has developed a light haze, but overall, a pretty nice looking coin. It is a clad composition of copper and nickel (CuNi). Nice find! Chris
Thats a pretty cool find. My brother once tripped over something and looked to see what it was and it was the corner of a tackle box sticking out of the ground. It had fishing tackle in it and a couple coins, but I can't remember what they where...
Just a thought... Go to your local news station and let them do a little human interest story on it and see if the people that made the time capsule come forward. It would be a neat gesture compared to just keeping a few coins of minimal value. Trust me, you won't be losing anything by getting the capsule and it's makers back together. It would be neat to find out who buried it. Most likely it was an elementary school class or scout troop... ??? If no one comes forward, you got 10 bux worth of coins to keep and had 5 minutes of fame on the news. If they do show up, you get 15 minutes of fame, good will, and nothing says that they actually get the coins back if you really want the 10 bux worth of clad. Just an idea...
Before doing that, you might want to double check metal detecting laws in your area and make sure that you're in the clear. Just a thought...
And a good thought at that. Sometimes, bringing attention to oneself can lead to undesirable results.
