Slow day at work today, so I need entertainment. I would like this in the form of a story on the greatest deal you feel you received when purchasing a coin. It can be from ebay, other auction, dealer, or whatever..... I will start. I bought a 'lot' of about 60 Canandian large cents on ebay last year for around $50. The description said "no key dates, decent coins, etc.." and it didn't list any dates. When I received the package, I was shocked to see almost all key dates, including thie first year(1858). More then half the lot was in UNC, and nothing under xf. next...
^ i lold. BUT. I recently went to my first auction, my father tagged along for the ride! There were two auctions that Saturday, the first had many old toys and coins and collectables, nothing went for under a hundred so we left 1/4 way. The next wasn't an online auction and didn't have lots of old timers with oobs to throw around (no offense), it was more local and what not. Lots of guns and just household stuff like a garage sale. Both auctions had lots of coins listed in the ads thats why we went. I got my hands on 40 silver certs. for 70 bux c: A five cent fractional currency piece in very nice shape no tears for $5.50. And a an 1852 seated dime in G condition for $6.50. I've never paid more than face value for any of my pieces (cash register FTW), and I feel I got a great deal on them all! So that's all that matters. A torn $500 dollar bill went for $525..it was rough.
I tend to ask cashiers at random places (dept stores, fast food, etc) if they have anything odd or interesting looking in their drawer. About 2 years ago I was at a Quiznos getting lunch and I asked the cashier if she had anything odd in her drawer. She told me that she had some half dollars and a gold dime. She pulled them out and handed them to me and I gave her money for them and I left. After I got into my car I opened my hand to look at what I had just received. The halves were nothing special so I tossed them in my center console and then looked at the "gold dime". That girl was not too bright. The gold coin did say 1/10 on it, which I guess she assumed meant 10 cents. It was a 1996 1/10th ounce gold coin. I have no idea who in the world paid her with it or why, but it sure as heck made my day!
It wasn't my great deal, but I was with a friend at a coin show in Vegas about 15 years ago. He wanted a 1909 S Lincoln for his set so we looked through books at about 50 tables before he found one he liked. Nothing special, it was probably VF, but nice color and detail. We get back to his place and he starts looking closer and swears there's an VDB on it. I think I see it too but it's so faint it's hard to be certain. He takes a chance and sends it to PCGS and sure enough, it comes back an S-VDB graded F. He bought it for $10. I never have that kind of chance luck, so I had to share his. Guy
Wow, a gold coin for a dime. Incredible. And, I've listened to the guy for a while and can't take it anymore. GET TO THE POINT dude! For anyone who listened to it all, what is his suggestion?
I've told this story before, but might as well tell it again: I went to a local auction a few years ago to check out their coins. This auction house usually has a lot of junk and cleaned coins, but every now and again you can find a good deal. I was looking at the listing of lots and found one labeled "Israel Mint Sets and Coins." Not one to hate on foreign coins, I decided to take a look at it to see what was in it. There were the packaged mint sets and a few loose coins, but the two that caught my eye were two coins from Bahrain that had a compass and a sundial on them. I thought these looked pretty cool, and they looked like silver to boot so I decided I could spend up to 20 bucks on the lot and still come out all right. Well, it came up to bid and I won it for 15 dollars so I felt I was doing pretty good. I got home and started going through the bag and checking out the coins. Sure enough, the silver coins were worth about $10 each so I was already ahead 5 bucks. Well, I got to the bottom of the bag and found another coin. It was fairly large and gold colored which made my mind immediately jump, thinking it was a gold coin. But, I figured who would put a gold coin in the bag, it is probably just a gold plated silver piece or something. After some research, I found it. It was a 500 Lirot Gold Israeli coin, about .8 agw. Still my best find to date.
Beautiful! I love hearing about people striking gold! I had a garage sale last summer and a old guy told me his wife bought a bag of wheat cents from a different garage sale earlier in the summer. At the bottom of the bag was a 2 1/2 gold piece! Some people have all the luck....
Not going to go into too much detail as I never know who is reading these I was at a local coin auction... bought a PCGS slabbed coin with a winning bid of $75 (+ 10% buyers premium) so it cost me $82.50 total. Sold it less than 48 hours later for around $2500. That was neat. Obviously no one else at the auction knew much about that coin
