But have taken an interest in lots of coins I'm reading about on here. I am kicking myself for the years of not paying attention to them! In my first week I found a 41 wheat penny in the freebie tray at a gas station, my bank had five bucks worth of half dollars, all bicentennials, no s's. all D's. A 71 and a 74 i believe. d's as well. Local grocery store manager said she doesn't get many halves, but found a silver one, so I am giving up on that location. We have about 4 banks in our town. I know and am great friends with the head teller at my bank, I am going to speak with her tommorow about buying halves. I can't really afford a box at a time, but may buy one when income tax hits. Do I have a better chance of finding silver in my rural area, or a worse chance. ?? Also, you roll searchers that have been doing this. Am i wasting time on dimes and nickels for silver content or are my odds better than with the halves as far as time to value of finds. Thanks in advance for any help!

your best bet is too work it slow, start with nickels, you will be suprised what u can find in a box of nickels, youcan hit silver in these boxes, i have found 6 silver nickels in one box, but most of them are wore but u never can tell when u can pull an occasional buffalo, or world coins. cents are fun, i think in my opinion, one some occasions u can pull tons of wheats, or not at all, but whats unique about cents you can find more world coins than ever, i have found canadian coins from the 30's in rolls cause people dont watch what they are doing when they roll them. ok my opinion dimes are a no-no, trying to find silver in there is like finding a needle in a haystack, and for quarters too, i have never ever found silver in there, and if you have the money go for the halves sometimesyou may find silver and sometimes not, all together its all a risk we roll searchers take, and sometimes it works out. just be patient and eventually silver will come knocking on your door. good luck.

    Corey,

The only nickels that contain any silver at all are the wartime nickels, 1942-1945. Nickel was needed for the war effort, so the composition was changed to contain 35% silver. It was originally planned that these nickels would be recalled at the end of WWII, so a large mintmark (P, D or S) was placed above the dome of Monticello to make it easy to spot them. However, they became instantly popular to collectors and non-collectors alike, and they were hoarded by the thousands. The recall never happened, but finding these in roll searches would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Stick to halves, quarters or dimes.

Wow. Varying opinions. I'm going to talk to my bank today and see if I can get $100.00 worth of half dollars and a box of pennies.

I have a complete set of the 1942-45 P,D, and S Wartime Silver Nickels. I thought they were a common set?

They're fairly common , but only come up occasionally in circulation . It would be a real challenge to put a set together from circulation .

maybe in your neck of the woods , but around here in west virginia the things come out in rolls like crazy. if you search quarters and dimes really a needle in a haystack. and plus you gotta have money to buy halves especially the boxes.

well you can also try your local coin shop to find silver, sometimes the dealer has good buys, and check local pawn shops sometimes you can find silver dollars, sometimes they know what they are worth or they sell them at melt value. good luck

Good luck to you. I'm going out on another bank run this morning. I don't live an rural area though. I am not sure that I buy into the rural bank theory. I can see the argument that some old rolls might be sitting in a vault for a while before someone asks for them but on the flip side of that there are going to be alot fewer people turning stuff in in a rural area.
