Okay guys, I wasn't paying attention last week and purchased a 1948-S Jefferson Nickel for my album collection. Unfortunately, I already have a 1948-S. So now I have to choose which nickel should represent my collection since there is only one hole in the collection. Here are the choices. The first coin was graded MS66 by the new ANACS as evidenced by the blue insert. This coin was purchased $17 in January 2011, was cracked out of the slab, and resides in the IS album. The second coin is also graded by ANACS but is an old small white slab and is graded MS65 5FS. This coin was purchased last week for $19 and is still intact in the slab. I will let the Cointalk members decide which coin should represent my album collection. However, I want you to consider all of the factors before casting your vote. Please take the following into consideration. Is each coin graded accurately? Keep in mind that what you see on the jaw and collar of the MS66 is remnant planchet roughness and does not detrimentally affect the grade since it is as struck. Is the second coin actually full steps. Consider that the first coin is already cracked out and considered raw while the second is still more liquid due to the slab. Feel free to ask questions as well before casting your vote. Thanks and have fun!
I was stuck in the middle until I noticed the weaker-struck reverse on the MS-66. I went with the 65FS.
Lehigh, I only chose the 66 because it is already cracked out of the slab. Even though that nick on the cheek dows not detract from the grade it is very distracting and less appealing to me. I would like to have seen the MS65 FS in your album however it would stink for you to crack that slab just to put it in your album. IMO I think that should have been a 66 FS
I also went with the 65FS. I'm not sure how ANACS didn't notice the reverse of the 66. The center of the building just seems like its been rubbed down.
being an english collector i dont know much about us grading companies. was just wondering how the 66 was graded higher then the 65? if i was grading it would be the other way around
I'll take the 65-FS over the 66 any day! The design is more complete than the 66 and the steps are definitely full. No contest IMHO!
65 for me. The 66 has that hit on the upper check and the luster does not look as good to me. Even with the the fact that you you'll have to crack it out.
Two factors: poor photographs on E-Bay & sniping software. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=200575931055&si=IrE%252Bvj6AYwsB8MbJsCrL6CdffUg%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_1957wt_1141
With my eyesight, I have a hard enough time grading Morgans, so you should take my opinion with a salt mine. I prefer the old ANACS 65FS over the 66. It's strike is much more appealing to me, and the two gouges on the obverse of the 66 are a definite turn-off. Since the 66 was cracked out of a Blue ANACS, I'm wondering if it would still grade as high if it were resubmitted. With that said, I think for the prices you paid for both, it would be a no-brainer for me. Chris
