My bank only had 4 rolls of halves today, and to my dismay every single half was a 1982. Not a good way to start my Friday.

If '82 then look for then look for the no "FG"

Has to be absolutely no trace of the "FG" to qualify.

Got a box of pennies... opened it up, pulled out 5 rolls with wheats as enders, including a '28 and a '38 as dates I can see.

First roll I bust open has three wheats in it, and more than 50% copper. Looks like another great box... Loving this right now.

EDIT: Just pulled 5 wheats out of a roll. :D

Double edit: 8 out of the next... Along with a '60-D and '61, both BU RD.

So the five rolls with enders had 3, 1, 5, 8, and 3 wheats per.

    Alright, here's the final tally;

    Rolls without wheats; 26
Rolls with; 24 (5 ender rolls)
About 30% copper... really fell off in the non-wheat heavy rolls.
    And 67 Wheaties.

Wow, that's a nice tally there. When I've searched cents my avg has only been 5-8 wheaties. Super box!

Hey everyone, been a while. Haven't posted in a bit (moved to Salt Lake City, started graduate school) but I'm "back."

Decided to put my financial aid refund check to use by searching through half dollar boxes when I could get them. Found a local credit union that will order me 2 boxes a week...found a US Bank that, so far, hasn't complained about getting $1,000 in halves every week. Was really excited to finally have the cash to fund this...but halves here are evidently pretty picked over. Here's my results:

$5400 in halves from the bank

    90%: 1 (1964D)
    40%: 10 (1965, 1966, 1967, 3 1968D, 4 1969D)
    Proof: 2 (1980S, 1993S)
    2002-present: 22 (3 2002P, 2 2002D, 2003D, 2004P, 2004D, 2 2005P, 3 2005D, 4 2006P, 2 2006D, 2007P, 2007D, 2010D)
    High Grade Keepers: 15
"Other": 1971D, 1974P - these both sound really different, almost as if they're hollow. Will try weighing them. Anyone seen halves like these?

I'm thinking of branching back to nickel boxes - still plenty of older coins out there. Thinking it's okay to keep getting halves, even though the silver hasn't been too common, until the dump bank decides to stop taking them.

Three banks on the way home this evening; zero halves at any of them. One offered me some "double-dated quarters" (1776-1976); I declined, but thanked him very politely, and chatted for a while, in hopes he'd remember me the next time something "unusual" shows up. And I got two rolls of regular quarters, from which my kids extracted five or ten new states for their folders.

    UGH!!

I got 4 boxes of dimes today and 2 of halves.. (my weekly thing)..

First two boxes of dimes are in plastic wrap rolls. I got a '00 Canadian out of both. I don't know if that is even worth anything.

So then I got ****ed and decided to look for silver in the halves. (just cracking open the rolls and looking at rims of coins.

    Box 1: 3-90%, 5-40%
    Box 2: 6-90% one a Frankie and one a Walker (My first EVER!! '36!!), 13 - 40%..

So I have to go through the halves in greater detail, but I'm happy with them. I'm beginning to think that I'm getting deep in their stash now and might need to put a halt on the dimes. The halves get more productive every week.

Still have those two dime boxes left and am dreading it.

    Any thoughts?

BTW searched $1850 in dimes last week and found 37 - '64 or earlier, including two mercs..

Is this low or high? I don't normally search dimes.

where are you guys finding all these boxes of coins? I have never seen one! I have a hard time getting 100-200 dollars worth of halves from a bank. Most wont give me 10 rolls of dimes nickels or quarters.

Also what other halves do people search for other than silver?

Other halves.. '72,'73'82 with no 'FG'.. 74-D Double Die Obverse..

Anything after '01 is NIFC (I think '87 is in there too)

Anything with an 'S' is a proof.. That's about it..

Sorry your bank won't order them for you.

I get my halves straight from the FED, and I must say that I am pleased. I hate getting brinks rolls or non fed rolls. Those are usually a lower percentage with a hit rate.

These dimes are killing me!! And I get $crewed every time I take them in to be counted. Funny how 'cents' show up on my printout.. dang machines!

Talk with the head teller or branch manager of where you bank at and see if the can order you the halves. Most banks will have boxes of dimes or nickels on hand that they'll see you.

Some people search for halves that weren't intended for circulation (1970 [which is also silver], 1987, 2001-P, and every year since 2002) and proofs.

I checked with some people at the bank I work and got some information on this situation. If a teller has coins in their tray they have to sell them to you if you request them. If a teller is to "purchase" coins they have to buy them from another teller. For a teller to refuse to sell coins out of the tray or to sell them out of the tray for a profit is an ethics violations that could result in termination.

Man this gives me a whole lot more to look for, wish I would have known this sooner! Ha

    What does no 'FG' mean?
