for the moderaters or long time posters, what is the rarest or most valuable coin you ever remember being asked about on the forum? in other words, you know how most people who describe what they think to be a rare coin and send a picture of same, almost always are told by the experienced collectors on here that it's probably a fake;but are there any examples in the archives of a coin description sent in that appears to be geniune. any treasure chest finds on here?(ex:found a 1916d merc with a metal detector) just curious, banny.
Banny, The biggest surprise so far,at least in my opinion was a coin owned by a member called BigD.He actually found a 1953 Lincoln cent struck on a silver dime planchet. Some of us couldn't believe it could be real but he submitted it to a grading service and guess what?Don't think I've ever seen anything quite like that. Here is a link to pics of a Coin World Article http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=10775 And one to BigD's announcement that he had gotten it back from the Service http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=10519 I just noticed he posted in a thread in Error Coins Today!!..Welcome back BigD!! Any further news??
There have been several questions asked in the World & Ancients forum about coins that were worth $4,000 - $5,000. I seem to recall a couple of them that would have been worth close to $10,000.
wasn't there a guy from the Philippeans last year with a local gold coin that he'd had fall into his lap that was one of only a handful known? IIRC, Heritage quoted him a possible auction price of $40-60k. Hmmm, I will see if I can find a link to the thread...
Although these are much less profitable finds, or some of them even suspect of being hoax threads, there have been 2 or 3 1922 no D Lincoln's found, as well as a roll of 1916D Mercs that someone inherited.
Widely believed to be someone trolling. I'll be damned if that's real, as I recall, the poster turned and ran when asked for proof.
Great question from the OP! Too many of the "rare" finds people post on here are repros or fakes. I haven't been around the forums long enough to read about an actually rarity being found in real time.
I don't think the OP will be reading this thread (check the date ), but it is a interesting topic for a thread. This is by far the best find I can remember: 1854-D $3 gold coin
There's this one found by myself that still has a known population of only three. http://www.cointalk.com/t28724/ Richard
Does anyone else who read that thread think that the OP writes in the same style as those Nigerian Bank Letters. I got tired of reading.. lol what happened? ok ok igo to the end of the thread.
that 1854 D 3 dollar gold piece someone was askin about for a friend which graded au 53? i think thats like a 40K coin. haha ok raider posted it up there anyway thats all i could think of.
