Rainbow Coloured Cent

I have a rainbow coloured cent. It is very brilliant in colour. Is it a tampered with coin? Has it any value? Shall I just toss back into my bag of loose change to roll?

I can't seem to scan it in with the colouring. So I googled some images and this coin, although not a cent, seems to be one of the closest displaying its colours.

On the coin itself, it is very blue/purple on the raised parts (head, building) and more magenta/pinkish-like on the flat surfaces of the coin. It is a 1999 D and the only flaw I can notice is a finger print mark above the word LIBERTY. It is in really good shape and is really really pretty.

Usually taking a picture is the best way to capture toning. Without a picture it would hard to evaluate it

And how do you take a picture where you can actually grab the toning. All the pics I just tried with my digital doesn't pick up on the spectrum of colours, just like my scanner didn't. Any ideas please?

P2230036.jpg P2230037.jpg This is the best I could do. I tried about 20 different shots and unfortunately these were the best :(
Btw...this is Tanker, my most prized 2 toned centless dog! I love my baby :D P2020032.jpg

I would call that unintentional toning, nice find! I hate saying NT or AT.

I've been finding some real nice toned cents as well. They aren't really worth anything more than face. I have been saving them just because they are very colorful. Why not?, if you like them keep them.

Thank you. What does NT or AT mean?

Also, the your ID pic resembles my coin, only on the obverse side (I think? the one with the building on it) is much more brighter in colour.

So now what do I with it? How can I keep it in its condition so that it doesn't get ruined or mutilated?

I like the colors in the bottom picture. It looks as if you might have a doubled die variety also.

A doubled die variety? How and where the heck do you see that?

When I look through the light and glasses I *may* see something on the last T in trust, but due to my very untrained eye, I never bothered to pay attention.

Explain and demonstrate please? I would like to know for future evaluation.

You could take it and put it in a 2x2 holder. Once in awhile I'll go to the bank and buy a $25 box of cents and sort through them. I save the pre 1982's, pre 1995 Canadian, the wheats and the cents that are toned. Putting together a 1941-2011 toned cent set. Wont get rich doing this, but it's kinda fun. There are some gorgeous toned cents floating around.

2x2 holder. Can I buy those locally or do I have to order them online?

About Tanker, my dog...yeah, he is definitely a double die stupid. I have never known a more stupid dog than my boy Tanker. A true "jock" all looks and no brains brains lol

Back to keeping my coin, so, where can I find these neat and nifty little cards? I though of making my own and using saran wrap. (I know, I shouldn't have posted that)

Any coin shop should have them. Very inexpensive. Visit a shop in your area and check it out. You may find a different type of holder you like better. You can also type in coin supplies and see what is offered online. Several suppliers should pop up. You might consider collecting toned cents. Not really an investment, but it can be fun. Good Luck. I have 2 Schnauzers. Freddy (pictured here on the left), and Schatzi. Wish people were as loyal to me as my dogs are. Be alot better world to live in for sure.

I agree. My dogs are the second most loyal to my, my husband ranks first! I've got pure mutts, 1/2 jack russell, 1/4pit bull mix, 1/4 german shepard. Now that is an "error" dog! lol but they are my babies.

Thanks, I will. I took a day off work, needed some me time maybe I will stroll around downtown and see what we have for coin shops.

Lara your dog sure shows a little of that jack russel in him with those short legs and the broad chest. I have a full stock jack russel that is the most awesome dog I have ever owned. This one knows every word we say because he is with us every minute day and night . He does all knids of stuff and his favorite thing is pushing his basketball around. This little fellow is snow white except his head is golden brown and he has a large perfect round brown spot about midway of his back. His name is Rascal and this is where my user name on here came from. Good luck Lara in your coin collecting and try to get that hubby of yours interested in coins. You may never make any money from collecting coins but it is a great hobby that gives people something fun to do. what good is money anyway after we are gone ?

    ? There isn't a 1999-D ddo. There's some ddr's (six of them) but no ddo's.
And lara, could you post a pic of the reverse?
I see cents like this all the time (with the rainbow look). I just toss them back in circulation.

AH, nvm. I now see you were kidding haha. Read the whole thing and completely missed that post for some reason. :D Post a pic of the reverse still please though :)
It very well may be a doubled die. Or maybe the infamous WAM (wide AM).....

Oh, and 2x2's are available at books-a-million :)

Not a WAM and I can't see any DDR markers. Just an ordinary cent.
