IMG_5540.1.jpg Found this roll searching and have never seen it before. Outline of South Carolina with SC inside. Wondering if anybody knows who did it and why. IMG_5538.1.jpg IMG_5537.1.jpg Otherwise a wholly unremarkable penny. Thanks for your thoughts.

Can't remember who did it, but they are as common as dirt. Made them with every state stamped in on the coins if memory serves. It was a private company.

As to why they did it, they did it to make a profit. They knew that there would be people who would buy the things for waaaaaaaaaaaay more than they cost to produce. Just like all the other junk they sell today.

Thanks - I knew it wasn't worth anything - I was just curious about the story behind it.

I have the whole set of 50. Two of mine are '75's and the rest are '76. A company whose name I can't recall made them for the bicentennial. Current value is around 15 bucks if you can find somebody that wants them.
Looking at that one, the stamp much farther north/west on the coin than on mine. Not that there were any guidelines.

edit: That $15 is for the set. Not individually. Figured I'd need to say that.

I have found a couple of those as well while roll searching and I always keep them. I have to check but I think I have the Easter Bunny somewhere. If I can find it I'll post a picture for you.

Thanks for the info guys. It seems like a strange practice to stamp pennies but that was the decade that brought us pet rocks so why not.

They still make them. So far in the past year two collectors in the local club have brought in full sets of the states one on 2000 cents and one on 2008 cents.

They sell individually actually for $1.00. I just sold about 20 of them to a guy that is for whatever reason hoarding them. He said the Hawaii was the tough one and he got one from me. I have found them over the years in change, rolls whatever. Seems I recall a board that the company had that came out and you could get a subscription or something and get 2-3 a month and fill the board.. They are common and the Kennedy one is everywhere. They came with a little cardboard insert that told the similarities between Lincoln and Kennedy. Assassinated, important dates etc.. Pretty neat information but stretching things a little.

I keep the ones I find roll searching
And lets remember coin collecting isn't always about monetary value.

I found a 1981 penny with SC state stamped on it. Does it have any value?
