i'm looking to buy a 1986 proof silver eagle. if if buy from empire coins (which is where i buy all my coins) it's only $53. BUT, if i buy from apmex, it's $65 AND comes with the original velvet case and certificate of authenticity. a youtube video recommended buying eagle proofs in the box with certificate of authenticity. i've been wanting the eagle for over a year and until yesterday, never knew the box and certificate existed. never heard of apmex until a week ago. i'm interested in the coin. i'm not looking to invest, i just want the coin because i collect dollar coins and i want the first issued dollar coin. and i'm sure some of you would say that for that reason i should just get the coin. but i'd like to know if there is a reason i should get the case and certificate?
Given the info you provided, just buying the coin makes sense. However, if you plan on selling or giving away your collection at some point it may be wise to get the original government packaging which is desired by many. Here is a link to a site that will save you $5 plus: http://www.moderncoinmart.com/cart1/product.php?productid=1292&cat=153&page=1 TC
Buying this common of a coin and not looking for top pop...I would use ebay...quick look, many have sold in the last few weeks sub $50 with all orignal packaging. Patience and a solid bidding strategy could save you 20% or more.
Buying the coin in OGP (original government packaging) is something that many collectors do, this one included. The box and COA (certificate of authenticity) are a 'must have' for one to have a complete set. Others could care less about stuff like that and are happy with just an example of each year in the particular issue. It really boils down to you, the collector, and how you want to maintain your collection. You're the boss. There is no right or wrong way to collect. It's all up to you.....
That really depends on you and what your presonal preference is. The coin was issued in the box with the certificate, and only that way. So if that matters to you then that's probably what you should get. If it doesn't - don't.
You have already indicated that you are willing to switch from your regular dealer in order to get the coin in the box with the COA. If you aren't willing to go to ebay to get it cheaper, then I would try asking your regular dealer if they can get it for you. It is a common enough item they shouldn't have any problem supplying you with one. They might even have one in stock. Can't hurt to ask them.
i just found that site this morning before i left for work and hadn't looked it over. but that price is only $3 more than at empire coins and empire doesn't include the box and certificate. i thank all of you for the advice. i'll check ebay to see who has what for how much. like someone said, a little patience can save me some money.
