Which TPG do you use, and why do you use it?

It depends on what the coins are and what I am trying to accomplish.

For weird die varieties, I often use ANACS and I also use them for relatively inexpensive errors. I have access to PCGS dealer pricing and that's still $40 for a mint error which works on major errors but not lower priced ones. Also, I did speak with ANACS and they will slab my SLQs by Knauss numbers. I have a good 100 coins I am going to send them.

For virtually everything else I use PCGS. The main reason that I slab coins is to preserve their value, plus I play around in their set registry but don't take it too seriously. However, in areas that I play in, PCGS coins bring quite a bit more than NGC coins on the market. I collect Barbers, and the Barber people tend to greatly favor PCGS plastic and the best Barber Half sets have generally been in PCGS plastic. Less so for certain SLQs, but for early Walkers the differences at the FUN auction were dramatic for the most part.

    And CAC...

Like them or dislike them, the truth is, CAC coins do generally bring a premium and they have rapidly growing market acceptance. I have been bringing my collection to CAC in person (I live in Jersey) over the past month or so, mainly my Barber Half set (PCGS VF-XF) now that it's sort of finished.

I'll say this, it's a real eye opener to see which coins will and will not sticker, I have been fortunate to have John Albanese actually sit down and explain why certain coins have not stickered, to be honest, his eye is better than mine and it's amazing some of the things that I have missed, mainly doctored coins. I have a PCGS VF25 06-O in an early blue tag holder, In my experience these coins are often conservatively graded. It's as nice as an XF40 and I thought it had a good shot at a gold sticker.

Nope, the right obverse field has been lightly tooled to remove a scratch/hit. I missed it, PCGS missed it, CAC didn't. And I have a pretty good eye with these coins, I've been running at a 94% success rate with my submissions of raw Barbers to PCGS.

I'll buy any top tpg slabbed coin . I don't really see PCGS selling for much more than NGC or even ANACS . Seem like at most places I shop it's the coin that makes the price . Put an ugly coin in a PCGS slab it'll sell for less than a decent coin in NGC . For submitting I'd go NGC for the sole reason I'm an ANA member and can have them slabbed without paying a fee for joining .

I guess it really depends on what you collect!

I use both but am really liking the new NGC holder. That said I know others disagree, but in my experience the PCGS slabs sell for more. Please note that i said the slab sells for more. A PQ coin will command a premium no matter what holder it is in.

You're right. Looking on ebay, the stickers and the slab are a bit more original (Lincoln cent/dollar, special bullion, and ATB quarters)
Even the normal sticker is better and more organized. Since in my original question I specifically said I don't care about selling coins, I think whichever holder meets my eye, I'll get. Also, the grades for PCGS and NGC are about the same, some higher grades each for different series.

My problems: I have a limited budget for coins, so I might pass.
    NGC Prices (1 coin): $30, no shipping/handling (I think so), $39 membership = $69
    PCGS Prices (1 coin) $14, $17 shipping/handling, $49 membership = $80
    ANACS Prices (1 coin) $19, $19 shipping/handling = $38

Got two ideas for storing coins: Air-Tites and the cheap-style slabs

The few coins I submit are via a friend who has membership in both NGC & PCGS - so no membership fees for me. I prefer the PCGS slab because I intensely dislike the NGC prongs, particularly on smaller coins. I also prefer to submit to PCGS since there is a market perception (right or wrong) that it will command a higher resale value. I own coins in NGC, PCGS, and ANACS slabs so the slab type has not been an obstacle in my choice of what coins to buy.

Another serious consideration with submitting is to use an authorized dealer. In fact, this can save you money with PCGS submissions.

A very good friend of mine just became a PCGS Authorized dealer and, as such, I didn't renew my Collectors Club membership because I get his discounts. In fact, several Authorized dealers will submit coins for you and charge less than published PCGS prices. It's a win-win, dealer keeps their volume up, they get a break, and I pay less in slabbing fees.

you will pay S&H fees with NGC as well, and I believe PCGS recently added an $8 fee per invoice. And those S&H fees, is that one way or both ways? For example PCGS is that $17 total S&H or $17 each way? Probably each way.

What depends on it ? Whether or not those in PCGS slabs sell for more ?

You pick a coin, any coin in any grade. And I'll just bet ya that I can find examples of that coin in that grade in NGC slabs that sold for more than another in a PCGS slab sold for.

It's not the slab, it's the coin that matters ;)

I have no favoritism towards any of them. The top 3 TPG's each have their own benefits.

But alot of it comes down to the value of the coin and whether it is worth it, to have it slabbed. Sometimes an airtite would be just as good for storing it.

OK, quarters first. I just picked a year at random and went with recent results.

    PCGS - http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=29114&Lot_No=26100

    http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1152&Lot_No=3584

    NGC - http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1151&Lot_No=10354

    http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=29114&Lot_No=26527

    Now Barber halves -

    PCGS - http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1127&Lot_No=662

    http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1152&Lot_No=3736

    NGC - http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1102&Lot_No=704

    http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1144&Lot_No=4170

Now, yes you can find other examples where the PCGS coin sold for more than a NGC coin did. But the point is just what I said it was, I don't care what the coin is or the grade. You can find examples where the NGC coins sell for more than a PCGS did.

Why ? Because it depends on the coin, not the plastic. And thank God there are still a few people who know that ;)

No, it isn't. It is the rule. The nicer coin, regardless of slab will pretty much always bring the better price. You would be well served to understand, and believe, that ;)

I use NGC because I'm an ANA member and I like the white slabs. I'll send in a coin for authentication and protection more than the grade,

Agreed...me too! They each have the place depending on the coin.

I use my local dealer, he does NGC or PCGS for $25 flat. It can take months, but I'm rarely in a hurry and the price is right.

Can you tell me a bit more about this? I have a few coins that I want to authenticate, but a graded slab isn't necessary for me. How does the ANACs authentication system work and what are the costs?
