Appalachian Nickels

    The NGC article talks about "bag toning" almost like this is a common phenomenon produced by the Mint bag itself. That seems unlikely since there aren't more coins with this sort of toning. I was thinking that the bag may have come in contact with something (such as gas fumes, for instance) and, over time, produced the colorful toning. Have you read anything that explains what might have happened to these coins?

    Personally, I consider toned coins to be damaged coins, but I have to admit...the colors are spectacular!

    It is a common phenomenon and it was produced by the mint bag itself. Added in with a little humdity and air.

    There are thousands of coins with bag toning.

    Ahhh, OK...I thought dramaticly toned coins weren't found very often...thanks.

    I was going to say something similar, but in short there is NO comparison between the BC morgans and the AH jeffersons.

    The only thing I will say in this thread about the AH jeffersons are they are very pretty and I've never seen a group of roll toned coins with such a varied toning pattern and coloration, and I wish I owned one. :)
