Hey don't bash the coin... And not to prove you wrong or anything but it did get a star Um......just not the one he was referring to ... Maybe the dealer I got it from was a retired kindergarten teacher and had a surplus of them babies laying around.
67 66 66 I'd love to hear what people are seeing on the Washington to take it down to a 65. And I'd like to rate the cent lower, but I just got stunned looking at "Guess the Grade 160", where a cent I would've given an MS62 turned out to be a 66. This one looks nicer to me than that one, but I still can't bring myself to rank it higher.
Washington -MS66 could possible 7 as it's clean. And I like the die crack by the eagle's head. Steel Cent - MS66 this could go either way. Mercury - MS66 Not FB, I really like it as it looks to have original skin. Doubt the toning people like it as much though. If in a newer holder I think shot 67 if old enough holder 65.
66 - I'm borderline on this between 66 and 67 but Washington's are the toughest for me and tough to find in 67 from this era. 66 - Don't think it's clean enough for a 67 66 - Strong chance of -1 IMO I'm jealous of your star!
Did the star designation even exist when that coin was graded? It looks to be either a generation 7 or 9 NGC holder!
To be honest I couldn't say for sure, but I am pretty sure it was before the star designation existed. That being said I agree with you there is no way this coin should get a star.
Gotta go 6's on these: 66 Washington 66 Lincoln 66 Merc A 67 on either of these coins wouldn't terribly surprise me.
Haha. I thought it looked good lol. Just me apparantly. I'm one of those weird guys that likes that type of toning though.
For what it's worth, I really like the toning also. Any toning that accents the portrait in favorable to me, and this coin has it.. toning makes the portrait pop imo. Also, the toning is more natural looking to me than any crescent rainbow, or wild multi-color vibrant spray painting job from the local Dr's beauty salon... this one's toning looks 'real' and give's it a nice antique feel... and as it likely doesn't ring many toner enthusiasts bell, would likely be that much more affordable for the more main stream collector.... .... all good things.
Actually it is one of my favorites in my 1940 set, but more because of the die crack than the toning. The dark toning is really pretty cool with the rainbow showing through when tilted into the light, but as much as I like it I highly doubt NGC would consider the toning on this coin star worthy.
One of my favorites is that 1896 Toned Morgan from Round 5. I go to the county library and am supposed to be studying coin books on grading, and I sometimes find myself thinking about that Morgan. I could give it a very warm and loving home Bigjpst. That is, should you ever decide to part with it. Not that you would, but I'm just saying.
