I always found it perplexing how many U.S. Coins had American Indians on them back in the 1800's and early 1900's. There were Indian heads on the penny and nickel -- and on gold coins of the denominations of $1, $2.5, $3, $5, and $10. So that is Indians on 7 different denominations of U.S. Coins. Meanwhile this country was stealing their land and performing mass genocide on them. Dont get me wrong, I love the Indian portraits on our coins, and find it sad how awful the American Indians were treated in our history -- but isn't that a bit like the Nazi's putting Jews on their coins in their honor?
Weren't we Ruling the West? The look of Indian cultural was artistically pleasing (in Europe too) so it might be more like the Republicans singing from La Cage Aux Folles at their convention during that year when there was an anti-gay thread running through their campaign. My G-Mom was Indian so as a kid I rooted for the Washington Redskins (especially against Dallas!).
"There were Indian heads on the penny and nickel -- and on gold coins of the denominations of $1, $2.5, $3, $5, and $10" And worse, Weren't (Bela Pratt's designs excluded) some of these actually Lady Liberty with a headdress? Steve
you know ... you got me there, Steve ... i dont know!! but i bet you are right ... how many of these Indian head coins were actually indians? now that I think about it ... perhaps just the buffalo nickel and the $2.5 and $5 gold coin???? the rest do look more like a fine-featured white girl wearing an indian headdress.
If you don't adjust for timezones (like me) today is the 66th Anniversary of the US Marines going ashore on Iwo Jima.
