Looked through rolls and bags and my own personal change. Haven't found silver yet! However, while looking through my change, I found three older coins at the same time, two wrong year and the other wrong denomination/no silver Here they are: 1965 dime, 1965 quarter, and a 1964 nickel (now I know that nickels haven't had silver since 1945) Still looking, JC
Pocket change silver didn't fair to well with the great hordes over the years! As soon as silver jumps up in price people horde the heck out of it!!! Ever notice how you can alway find very old nickels and pennies but no dimes, quarters, or half's? Silver hording is alive and well!!!
The number of people that spend hours a day looking through rolls and such almost every day for at least the last 3 years, have increased tremendously. Before silver started its big climb, I could buy a bank box of halves and find at least a roll of 40% halves and probably 10 or more 1964 JFKs. Today, I would be surprised to find even one 40% half. No longer worth the time unless one really , really enjoys it
Plus, the federal government melts down a lot of silver coins. I myself have only found one Roosie and one silver Washington in circulation (53 and 64, respectively)
Silver coins started disappearing from circulation big time starting in 1968 or so, when the government announced that it would no longer be redeeming silver certificates and the intrinsic value of the 90% silver coins exceeded their face value. Even in 1969, it was hard to find 90% silver coins in circulation, even though they had last been minted just a few years earlier.
I wouldn't worry about not finding silver. I've only found 2 dimes and 4 war nickels - and that's mostly because I worked with a cash register.
I used to find alot of halves roll searching but not anymore. I did a box of halves this week and found nothing. I found one 1967 half out of $160 of customer wrapped rolls. I have only found a few dimes or quarters searching change and it has been a while. I was a cashier in high school and I think I found maybe five silver coins in two years. Only other thing I found was a few old notes.
I would be very surprised if you found any silver in circulating coins. People have been sorting this out of currency since the 1960s and now, 40+ years later, finding a silver coin is going to be very rare indeed. It's probably made worse by the commercial coin counters putting in processes to yank any silver from the masses of coins they count for the retailers.
Finding silver in your chance is extremely difficult. I've only found two silver coins (dime and quarter) in change. I have found quite a bit in roll searching. I found a 40% half earlier today in four rolls that I've searched.
In three boxes of halves ($1500) I found only three 40%'ers. One in one box, two in the second box and skunked in the third box. I was going to recycle them to get more but had to pay some bills, $660. Then my son's car's front brakes went, $300. So I guess I'll never be really able to roll search halves to any big extent. But if I can keep some cash with me all the time I might walk into the right bank one day and find a couple of CWR'S loaded with silver. ( Just call me McDUFF 'cause I keep dreamin'). zeke
Hey Zeke, you get extra points for being honest! Hell I can bearly snuff a couple boxes of pennies LOL. and at that the wheaties are becoming extinct! Silver? Last time I found silver in pocket change was about six years ago when my wife handing me a common date merc she found in her purse.
I received a 1964 silver quarter in change a few month ago. knew it was silver the second the cashier handed me my change. First one I found like that in decades. Oh almost forgot about the 1940 dime I found in my change bucket last year. Where it came from I do not know.
Just went to the bank today to get a box of halves and the teller looked over to the other teller " hey you still have those silver halves in your drawer?" I was excited, I thought there was going to be more than 2 dollars worth but hey silver is silver. It only cost me 2 dollars so I made out. About to state looking through this box, lets seee what happens
I find silver coins on a fairly regular basis. I manage a pawn shop, and have a tendency to sit in the back during the afternoon and sift through change/paper. It's amazing to see what people use to pay their loans. Last week someone paid me with a 196x $10 that looked almost uncirculated, needless to say I snatched it up immediately!
I haven't found any silver in circulation as of yet, and I look through ALL my change. However, my mother found a '48 dime in circ just the other day and gave it to me......LOL! She knew I would want it. It helps to have people helping you out!
