These have been bringing like 250 or so. Which is still way over price guide anyway. But this ike brought 481.01... This is the most common year of the silvers. It has the highest mintage. It's not a rare or old holder. Even then I wouldn't have imagined this would bring so much. I do believe it was being sold by witter coin shop in San Francisco. So I'd imagine he has a large following base of people. But still.
That is more than double than what I have in my entire set. I did it though twelve years ago or so.Maybe someone got caught up in a bidding frenzy.
CAC sticker did it. Not too many recently sold in that grade with the sticker, and some people may not be able to submit themselves. Plus, with CAC starting their own registry, there's even more reason for some people to pay (overpay?) for certain coins.
Kinda crazy. PCGS site shows MS-70's selling for less and MS-69's for much less but geekpryde is probably right.
I know how tough it is to get an ike to pass. I have about 20 with. And about 35 that failed. One submission of 20 there were only 3 passes for ms67. I've only gotten one ms68 to pass and it was a 72 like this one. Then I have a few more that I bought but it is tough to find them cheaply. But I never dreamed it would bring this much already...
I bet they want to try and cross it for a + that's not a bad idea either. I would leave it as is if it were me though.
There's actually no way to really tell if it did sell for that much. There's a thing on ebay called "shill bidding". They could have had a friend or relative place a huge bid on it just to inflate the price. I've been buying on ebay since the early 2000's and I've seen everything going on there. In some cases, the seller relists it a week or two later, adding in the description that it's being relisted because the last winner backed out or something to that extent, but then the new starting price is a hair over what the last bidder won it for. Seriously.
Maybe it's a 2SB-301, which Ike Group prices at $350 in MS68. https://www.ikegroup.info/?page_id=1161
You're right there's about three people who are doing this. They're getting in a bidding war. And yep. But these are scarce and to the collectors I guess the sky is the limit. I don't ever see these relist. I have these on saved search. If a CAC ike lists i usually am right on it. Most of the time it's on auction. But I have captured a few low priced but it now that just listed. Like this one the other day. 39.00 BIN. That would have brought over a hundred on auction. I watch these constant. One day I had a nicely priced one in the shopping cart. But before I got to the final screen someone else beat me. On the last frame there was a quantity problem... but this was the nicest deal. I haven't seen a 68 bring over mid 2s. Even the key 73s. 481 is insane!
Still a premium. But yes. Look at what is happening. This series was considered junk silver. And to some I guess it still may be. But these guys think this is gold
