Canadian Mint vs US Mint

Today, I decided to look at the Royal Canadian Mint site for coins. Wow! I thought that ALL of their products were a lot better than US Mint products. They seemed more interesting and inventive. But the US Mint doesn't make anything close to that good, and they make these humongous programs (224 different quarters from 1999-2021/P+D).

Is that just what the US Mint normally does, or is it just my tastes?

I think both mints are trying to bankrupt the coin collectors similar to post offices trying to stamp collectors, too many designs.

If you could consistently sell something for more than it was "worth" wouldn't you?

Of course you do. I knew there would be an anti-American slant before I read the thread itself. It's typical.

Part of it is personal taste, but there's more to it than that. Part of it is "grass greener on the other side of the fence" thinking. Part of it is the natural collector instinct to be fascinated with something new and different - we're especially interested in novelty.

Another factor is the peculiar phenomenon of American anti-Americanism. Part of that is the "grass greener" syndrome, but there are other factors as well.

It's quite odd - I read the media of many other nations, and I see an enormous amount of pride and almost complete disregard of those nations' many flaws. Instead, I see an absurd "blame it all on America" delusion - which many Americans believe as well.

Apparently the market prefers US Mint products, as US modern bullion outperforms all other nations. Up-to-the-minute quotes :

    American gold Buffalo $1430.50
    American gold Eagle $1418.90
    Canadian gold Maple Leaf $1407.40

Similar advantages for American products versus other nations; silver bullion, too.

Personally, I feel most of the Canadian Mint's offerings are either unbelievably unimaginative (more pictures of the Queen, anyone ?) or ridiculously gimmicky. But I've never started a thread saying the US Mint is superior; if anyone did, many Canadians would howl and defend their nation's reputation.

    Americans should do the same.

I lived in Canada in 2002 and 2003. What a wonderful country! At that time, my dollar was worth $1.50 Canadian. It amazed me yesterday when I was re-valueing my Canadian coins to find the the dollar is now worth less than the loonie. Good show Canada!

Okay, I reread my original post and I'm sorry for what I said. (I know i'm being WAY too biased)

I really don't hate America. I'm not lying, I don't. Canada isn't better in any way. I didn't use going to the website as power. I just think, in my opinion, that nowadays, the US mint products aren't as innovative. (I didn't state my words right the first time)

That's your opinion, and I'm not here to change it. I know that US bullion outperforms and outsells Canadian bullion. Why do silver eagles break sales records? People like US money!!!

Now, if you want, I'll restate this entire thing.

For once in a long while, I decided to check out the Canadian mint website. I think that a lot of the coins have better and more original designs than the coins from the US Mint. However, I many designs from the US Mint are very nice, especially the commemoratives. I just want to know, which coin designs/products do you like better?

I would say , one of the most important and recognizable points of distinction are Quality and quality Control . In the past , it was my opinion that the RCM did the better job in these areas. Recently , I have made some recent purchases from the U.S. Mint , and to my surprise , they were superb . Unfortunately , I think the RCM still holds an edge , all things considered.

    I agree 100% .
the US Mint Quality control is very bad.

Guess that is a matter of perception. Europe gets quite a bit of despise from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, except we tend to not call it anti-Europeanism. Such simplifications may be convenient ("somebody over there says something that I don't like - must be anti-American") but have never been very helpful. And judging from most CT posts, I don't think that American coin collectors are affected by what you call American anti-Americanism. ;) As you point out yourself, most US collectors prefer US coins.

Except, of course, the OP and dozens of threads like it... and this interesting quote :

Unsubstantiated by fact. I see many thousands of ASEs, and they seem nigh perfect to me. The bottom line is this : modern minting techniques create fabulously perfect coins. The US Mint makes magnificent coins.

I really think it's all a matter of personal preference. There are American coins that I like a lot more than Canadian coins and vice versa. Are Canadian coin designs more imaginative? Maybe but I don't know what their process is for coin designs. For US coins there are so many groups that have input into the design that it tends to water down the artistic process, IMO, so that could be part of the reason for differences in coin designs.

Come on now! I'm an American, have been all my life. Is there any others that love this country, but can't get over how boring, uninspiring, and lacking of artistic design our coinage has become? Our ASEs are due for some sort of change when compared to almost all other 1oz bullion rounds. Our circulating coinage suffering from excessive dead president syndrome... You can still be patriotic, and offer some criticism to our country's coinage designs.

My friends always ask me about the mints products. I tell them if you want a piece of art, buy one of their collector coins, and if you want an investment buy bullion coins or bars.

I guess some some collector coins become more valuable in time, but it is better in my mind to collect coins because you love it, and not for some potential future unknown dollar value.

Just my own humble opinion. At least in my way you are never disappointed with any coin purchase.
