Daniel Carr's 2009 Proof ASE

I was listening to Daniel Carr on the Coin Show yesterday and learned that he is manufacturing 2009 Proof ASE's (DC mint mark). I checked out his website yesterday (Moonlight Mint) and he's selling them for $130 each. Has anyone bought one of these coins? It looks pretty neat and people are already reselling them on ebay for $160 to $170. I'm really feeling needy for a 2009 proof ASE and may take the plunge on one of these. What do you think?

Really? You condone forging US coin designs? I know its a "bullion" item, but it still is legal tender. I don't see how the man is not behind bars.

Sorry, but items like this infuriate me. What is the point of us asking Congress to enforce COPY to be affixed on Chinese fakes if we support this type of forgery? A tiny mintmark change and you don't think of all of the future problems this will cause our hobby?

 

Overstrike != forgery.

 

While he is talented , I would like to see him focus on his own creativity, and not on the coat-tails of Mint Designs and issues.

 

Daniel Carr has been discussed in depth here many times in the past. I personally feel the attacks on him by members of this forum are unwarranted. To quote Leadfoot:

This is a case of easy money. The mint refused to put out proof ASE's... well, you just left a huge niche market hanging. Mr. Carr was just smart enough to realize this niche and fill the unmet need. The mints loss is his gain.

A quick search of eBay completed auctions show about two dozen sold in the past two weeks... from a low of $107 to a high of $199... with the average around $135.00

I think that Mr Carr just loves making coins, and wants to make a profit off of it. Nothing special.

Anyway, there is no need for a COPY on them. The mint never made 2009 Proof ASEs

Since the mint didn't make any 1918, 1919, 1920 , etc, proof lincoln cents , is it ok to have them made and imported from China and sell them to newbies also???

 

I think Carr's 09 proof is not exactly tasteful but I fail to understand the aneurysm inducing fury it seems to provoke in some people. The man took a lump of silver with no numismatic value and turned it into.... a lump of silver with no numismatic value.

 

I agree 110%, legal tender ~ make me laugh. You are more likely to get locked up for attempting to spend that legal tender than you are J-walking in front of an officer. Come on, the government messed up the supply chain so bad it couldn't make an easy profit and they were too embarrassed to admit it openly. Good for Daniel if he can make a profit of such a big screw-up!!! In 2010 I spent a considerable amount less on mint products than the year before because I was so mad with the 09 BS. I hope many more followed suit! While I'm not about to spend $130 on DC's 09 I hope he can make a nice profit.

 

If they have been restruck over original genuine cents, I don't see anything illegal about it.

 

So the Mint never made these coins in 2009, so it's OK???? The US Mint never made NORFED coins either but the dude got arrested and all his business confiscated because he made coins using the dollar sign........ just like these only the word dollar is spelled out..... That puts that possibility to rest...... This should not be ok.
