    YES....nice links...makes everyone's life a little easier. LOL

Nobody on the planet apparently has a topo map of the Lincoln cent. I scoured the earth a long time ago for months to no avail. From my research, it can be done albeit with a very expensive piece of equiment. An engineer friend of mine used to work for GE Aircraft, said he'd do it for me, but never got around to it and now he doesn't work there anymore. :(

Look at the bottom 2 pics in post #11 Mike. Sure looks like a PCGS slab to me.

If it wasn't for your full size pics, and their clarity, I wouldn't think the coin had been harshly cleaned either. But looking at that coin in such blown up detail it's kind of hard not to see them. There looks to me to be raised lines and incuse lines all over that coin. And the only way they can get there is if it was harshly cleaned. But the toning and the bad alloy mix do a very, very good job of disguising them.

It's not that anything actually looks AT to me. It may not even be AT. When I say a coin is re-toned, that toning might be NT or it might be AT. Coins can re-tone all on their own after a harsh cleaning, even after a dip. Or, they can be re-toned quite intenionally.

There are more than a few "woodies" out there that are not really woodies. The wood grain effect is really not that hard to do. It can be imitated quite easily. And it can also easily be used to cover up a multitude of sins. For example, those full size pics of yours, take a good long at them. In the smaller pics the coin looks to be really clean hit wise. But if you look at those blow-ups there are really quite a few contact marks on the coin, both sides.

My thinking is this - somebody found a well struck '26-S. But it was dirty, or had unsightly toning or something, and they tried to clean it up. Now that was 1 owner. I suspect another owner ran across it, saw it for what it was and decided to play doctor. He then toned that coin up real pretty, hiding all the bad stuff. Looking at it with the naked eye - you'd never even see it. I doubt you'd even see it with 5x.

Could I be wrong ? Sure, all I've got are your pics. But those are some good pics ! Anyway, that's my opinion.

I'm using IE 7. And I don't have to scroll, not ever anymore. Right after Peter's last update I did, for a while. But then things went back to normal. I just assumed Peter got the scroll bug worked out.

I know there are settings in IE where the program will automatically re-size pics so they fit your screen. Mine is set that way. Maybe that's why I don't have a problem anymore. I dunno, I can just report what I see.

Doug - I use IE 7 also if you know what the setting is let me know. I have to scroll also. Right after this post I am going to play with the settings, this is the only forum I have to scroll on.

As to the coin I think the cheek had an old carbon spot on it and not sure it is wear. I can see this coin being anything from high AU to MS63(maybe 64). I see what doug is saying when you blow up those pictures, but I do not really know if cleaning or what. And thoseare nice pictures of a nice coin.

And yes a while back photobucket did something that resized some of my overly large pictures. Doesn't look like it hurt yours, but made mine thumbnail size. I had to resize my pictures before uploading. I thought they had it fixed.

Please do tell. How exactly can you fake a woody? I'm not buying that until you show me the beef and explain the technique.

Do you realize how many hacks and cracks there are in IE7? It's bomb just waiting to go off in your PC.

Then stop complaining about other peoples photos. If you feel like using some outdated internet browser, it's YOUR fault that the photos force you to scroll, not theirs, and I don't want to have to click links just because you won't get a real internet browser and instead rely on something that is quickly falling behind and resorting to stealing ideas from the true innovative web browsers.

It's PCGS graded. I purposely left the grade off to better discuss the notorious soft detailed coins that San Francisco produced up to the 31-S . I also used my original camera image rather than the circular cropping that I normally use. I want to get as many unbiased opinions as I can using the thinking of buy the coin not the label.

The 26-S is the rarest MS65 and better wheatie out of 150, the 9th rarest at MS60 and better!

This is a tough tough coin by all accounts. AU coins are going to look XF!

auction numbers for this coin are closing super low comparatively to its rarity

BTW - I misquoted Red Book in my original Post - the world series homerun for finding a full details coin was an analogy related to the 26-D not the 26-S. Although I think that the comment under the 26-D paints a better and more accurate picture of the 26-S - I got a new scanner.. I got an excuse to post the RED BOOK 26-S info regarding the strike.

I have been researching this coin off and on all day and have left open this reply - I have quite a few images of MS coins that I will post a bit later.

Here is a quote from Jamie Hernandez

Ok - for some visual aids. ALL PCGS coins - images from COINFACTS and registry sets - obverses only to simplify - Hyperlinks for Thads perusal - pasting links twice is a PITA.. get a bigger screen with the little mouse wheel thingy would ya!?

Hey buddy, we have chatted enough, that I think I know you. it won't hurt your computer to try chrome. it is so nice, so clean, I swear you will never look back.

I have to scroll even on a larger screen and I have a little mousing wheel thingy. It does not help. I usually just double click the picture to open in a new window to keep from having to scroll - works, but yep it is a pain.

Interesting coin. Yours looks nicer than the AU coin, but not as nice as the 63's. I wonder how the luster in hand would compare to the MS coins.

  15. EyeEatWheaties

I thought I understood raised and incuse lines, but I'll be damned if I can see or find any suspect lines. I mean what are the odds that the lines would go the same direction as the wood graining. Would you mind downloading and drawing some arrows in paint to the lines specifically that you are seeing and describing ?

BTW its a bit funny to me to see posts about certain marks on hi res images of coins that influence peoples opinion of a grade to far down. EVERY 66 67 coin I have imaged has unbelievable battle scars when viewed at 50x. This coin is almost devoid of those type of nicks and dings comparatively most coins I have..

  16. EyeEatWheaties

    EyeEatWheaties Cent Hoarder

yeah - I would like to know how the luster compares. I have other 63's that it looks similar too. I don't know and doubt i ever will be able to compare side by side to other 26-S coins, there are only about 200 -63/64 PCGS coins out there.

This is another one of those times when I wish I finished my search for software that basically videos your movements on a monitor. I wheel the image up and down but have to drag the scroll bar left and right.

In Chrome, when I click on the image it opens in a separate window, I click on it one more time and it is at full resolution. when I am done viewing the image, I close the tab (which appears at the top like a file folder) and I am back at that screen (here) that I came from.

For me it is super smooth and quick... I spend a lot of time with images and am always looking for shortcuts and I like it. Chrome is not invasive (unless you want it to be) to your computer. If you haven't tried it. try it! you can uninstall if it isn't for you.

I got tired of crashes and just the amount of junk on my screen with IE it got to the point that it seem to take a 1/3rd or more of the real estate on my monitor. I reluctantly and nervously tried Firefox a couple of years ago and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread until I picked up a Google redirect virus that my paid for, virus protection didn't catch and ... Norton wanted me to pay another $100 for special services.

Soooooo.... I heard about Chrome, a little nervous about selling my soul to Google, but what the hey Microsoft hasn't been that bad, so I took the leap of faith. At first I was. whoa!! this is way too bare bones. How do I print? lol it is so sweet you can select the functions that you use and place them where you want. Try it out people!

If it's slabbed already and you agree with the grade than you already have your answer.

It is a nice coin and I'm on the fence between AU & MS. I don't see the cleaning and retoning and would really like to hear what GDJMSP is seeing.

This is a continuation of my promotion to use chrome. I should add that there are sites that do not support Chrome, like some of check depositing from home, Creating shipping labels directly from PayPal, a couple other times. Not a big deal when I run into something like that, I just open Internet Explorer (IE) do my business and quickly close it!

These are screen shots of Chrome in action with images on this forum.

First up is how images appear to me. direct link -> http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z242/papasteeze/Coins/Penny%20Photo%20Tests/ea77e033.jpg

When I click on the The image, it opens in a new tab, (arrow points) to new tab. I have my preferences set that way, however I also think that is the default. Thad's Link = -> http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z242/papasteeze/Coins/Penny%20Photo%20Tests/b9a05f3e.jpg
    [IMG]

Now When I click one more time on the image in the browser screen I get full res of the coin in the position you see in this screen shot. My mouse wheel runs this image up and down, I use the scroll bar at the bottom IF I need to see the far left and right of the coin. When I am done, click the X on the new tab (arrow points the way) Direct link = http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z242/papasteeze/Coins/Penny%20Photo%20Tests/f445152e.jpg
    [IMG]

I clicked the X on the tab that opened the image and I am back to where i started. This screen shot is to show the drop down of the tools of the browser and to show how clean my desktop is. I only have a bar across the bottom, (running programs) and 3 bars at top, 1 is all the open websites. 15 or more of them.. next is the address bar which you can type questions directly into. Me and google chat a lot with each other. the third bar is my book marks and frequently used website. Not going to say what grade this is yet. I would like to get some more info on the coins that had the strike issues like the 26-S plus I want to hear back from doug - I still don't understand what he is seeing.

There's quite a few settings that change your display options. Some are browser settings and some are OS settings. I use XP Pro, so the settings I use may be different for you if you use something else. Anyway, using IE 7, under Internet Options in the Advanced tab there is a setting that says - Enable automatic image resizing. Try checking that. Also, you can change your Zoom level to various percentage numbers by using the Tools options. Then there are the Page options, and so on and so on. There's a ton of stuff that allows you to change how web pages appear in your browser. Any of them could possibly be the problem, or it could be the OS settings.

All I know is that it works just fine for me so it would work for you too, IF all of your settings were the same as mine. If they are not - well, then maybe it won't.
