Funny, I do the same thing sometimes. Good to know I'm not alone! I was 11 when they started minting these and just starting high school. Boy has life changed since then. I know for a fact that I wouldn't mind going back to those 6.5 hour days with an hour for lunch and two twenty minute recesses LOL. I'm hoping that the Mint does something in 2011 for the 25th anniversary but who knows. Technically 2010 was the 25th year, but that whole math thing didn't stop them from minting the 20th anniversary set in 2006 rather than 2005.
Sorry, I missed this bit. Yes you're reading it right - collectors had a choice of the traditional 4 piece gold set or the 5 piece set with the 1995-W ASE thrown in as a freebie for the same $999. Apparently a lot of them snubbed the 5 piece set as only 30,125 of a possible 45,000 were sold. The rest as they say is history, and the freebie became the key to the ASE proof set fetching anywhere from $2,800 to well into the $3,000+ area these days if certified PR69 DCAM. I do wonder if the 2008 Rev 2007 burnished coin isn't somewhat of a sleeper. An estimated 47,000 of those escaped from the Mint, yet it sells for "just" $375 - $400 despite the low mintage. Time will tell. For all the value of the other coins, my absolute favorite is the 2006 reverse proof. Stunning. I really wish the Mint would make it a regular offering.
30,000 and 45,000 is relatively low mintage but is, by no means, low mintage. There are classic commem's that have mintages of well under 10,000 that can be had for a few hundred dollars.
Very true, and as with all things it's a matter of supply and demand in a free market. There are simply more ASE collectors right now than there are collectors of classic commems. That could change at any time of course as things go hot and cold. I was more thinking out loud that for two coins in the same series, the price disparity between the 47,000 available 2008 Rev 2007 burnished coins and the 30,125 available 1995-W proofs is rather large. No telling though whether the gap will close, when, and if so in which direction. I think a lot of commems are overlooked btw not just the classics. I saw several gold commems (albeit moderns) go for barely spot on Teletrade last Sunday. Those may one day prove to be something of a steal.
Congratulations on the collection!!! The coins look fantastic. I can sympathize in terms of trying to photograph the coins and having issues with lighting. My collection of ASE is mostly complete except for the expensive years, like the 95, lol and of course the nonexistent 2009 version. I hope one day I can proudly post my picture of the collection like you did!!
I recently bought a 2007 burnished ASE, and I'm not sure how to spot this error. Can you elaborate? On the 2 reverses picture, is the item on the left the normal 2007 reverse and the item on the right the 2008 reverse? Congrats on completing a VERY impressive set!
For several years of the US Philippine series, multiple denominations saw mintages of 500 or less. Many of those can be found for less than $5,000 (or even less than $1,000), which boggles my mind.
Thanks George! The error appears on the 2008 coins not the 2007. In the photos, the left is a standard 2008 coin with the 2008 reverse whereas the right is a 2008 coin with the 2007 reverse. There's a better illustration of it here: http://silvereagleguide.com/2008-w-silver-eagle-reverse-of-2007/
