Does anyone get weird looks when they go into banks to cash in or ask for rolls? Considering the fact that a lot of business owners do it it may be relatively normal, but I've never done it before. Just wondering I cant imagine a 12-15 year old going in and asking for 10 rolls of quarters, halfs etc etc w/o people wondering what the heck Maybe I'm looking into this to much.
you should have saw the look on their face when I walked and whipped out a wad of cash, only to tell me they weren't able to give me that much change
I would say 1 out of every 3 tellers I have gone to have to think twice about the half dollars I am asking them for. They always offer me the presidential dollars instead. lol. the funny part is when I dump my half dollar boxes (usually 2 per week), when I try and turn them in they are usually surprised to see halves at all, let alone in such great quantity, and then there is the weight of each box, which you can never be prepared for.
I'm thirteen and I go in and buy rolls all the time, and nobody ever seems to wonder why I would be buying so much change.
The trick to staying sane, IMO, is not care what anyone thinks about you. (not including family and romance interest)
Don't let anyone hassle you. your money is just as good as anyone else. Just act professional. No one will be the wiser. Only you when you get either 90 percent or 40 percent silver halves or any type of silver. Also look for the War time nickles, the ones with the P,D,or S on top of the house. they go from 1942 to 1945. Also Good Luck . Dean 295.
Of course you get weird looks, and as soon as you leave the bank, they call the DEA to advise them that you may be laundering drug money. Then the DEA puts a tail on you to document your activities. So, be sure to keep an eye out for large, black SUV's with heavily tinted windows. Chris
I got weird looks at first from my teller at Chase but after a couple of months, she started to recognize me and knew that I was coming in for some presidential rolls. I got strange looks too when I first asked for straps of $2 bills
Yeah, I went into my bank last week and asked for some rolls of halfs for the first time. The teller just stood there with a smile on her face and didnt say a word for what felt like a minute. Then she slowly said "Uhhhh, nooo we dont have any" still with a huge grin on her face. "Well wait, let me check the drawers. (after walking over to another teller), no we dont have any rolls of anything." I reply "none at all, of any denomination?" "No, and we cant get into the vault because its closed and our "Vault Teller" isnt here now. But there isnt any in there anyway". I wanted to call her on her BS, but I had the wifey and 2 year-old waiting, so I just brushed it off and finished my other transactions. This was at a Chase by the way. Reminded me of a time 15 years ago when I went to the BofA branch in New Delhi, India to withdraw cash. They gave me all large bills of $500 (Rupies) which I would never be able to spend on the street because no one there had enough money to give change for a $500 bill. So I asked the teller to break some of the bills to 5, 10, and 20's. She refused, and after I pressed her for a few minutes she yelled "We are here only to TAKE your money, nothing else!". Then proceeded to close the window and stormed off. I hate banks...
I once cashed in $6500 in halves. I needed a handtruck to get them in the bank. Each roll had to be counted by hand. I hauled them in in empty green monster boxes. I got some looks. I actually went into the bank and spoke to the branch manager first and asked her how to proceed before unloading the boxes out of my trunk. I also informed her that I was carrying a concealed firearm. It was summertime and not concealed very well!
Nah it's not true... 1. DEA doesn't have much interest in the money resulting from the drugs...they want the drugs, not money 2. I highly doubt your neighborhood druggie is going to the local dealer and buying his dope in half dollars...or any combination of cents...if they did it would be 100x easier for the cops to catch dealers...just look for the guys with their pants bulging with coins. So no you don't have to worry about the DEA... But you do have to worry about the Secret Service. Protecting the president is only 1 aspect of what they do. The other is dealings in counterfeit currency. So they would be suspicious of dropping off counterfeit coins in turn for real valid cash.
I buy rolls in spurts. Never $100.00s or $1,000.00s (!!) but maybe $50-$100 worth of quarters, halves (if available), or cents. I used to get some strange looks when I started doing this about five years ago but not now. I have found that with the poor economy more people are getting on the sorting band-wagon. I used to be able to go into my local branch and buy $50.00 worth of cents no problem, but now, many times, I go in only to be told that they have already been bought out!
Just today I went into a bank in Walmart where I had an eye appointment just to get $30 worth of cents and nickels. The lady gave me a bit of harsh look but she got them for me anyway. In the end, I ended up with my first found buffalo nickel, and a lot of 95% copper cents.
