There have been even more ridiculous bids on the bay before-- such as, several thousand dollars for a handful of common Lincoln cents (discussed on CoinTalk a few years ago).

No doubt he's asking way too much money for it but it's certainly not out of the ordinary on ebay and as far as I know he's not violating any rules that I see. Bottom line is if someone wants it they'll buy it and if they don't they won't. It may be a way to do something subversive that has nothing at all to do with selling the coin at all. I'm just sayin' strange yes, but stranger things have happened on ebay. :yes:
I don't see any reason why you would think this item is related to silver at all. This is a novelty item that serves a purpose other then being a silver half dollar. I wouldn't pay $77 for it because I don't collect paperweights, not because it's only worth $10 in silver. Someone who collects paperweights, or wants to give it as a gift for a '64 birthday, would enjoy it. It is worth what someone is willing to pay. I think you are being a little hard on the seller. I dont care if you collect silver , paper weights or belly button lint. The prices for both items is exorbitant. These are the types of people that are willing to throw a fishing line out there in the hopes that someone bites. It is worth its weight in silver, weather the intended purpose is for a paper weight is irrelevant. I know there is the saying " something is only worth what someone is willing to pay" but lets be realistic..... And his BY IT NOW price is only 2 dollar from what he would take. I already tried and he counter with 75.
It's worth more than it's weight in silver to the right buyer. Reread gbroke's response. To YOU it may be only worth it's weight in silver. No need to harrass the seller especially if you aren't interested in buying it.

I don't collect paper weights but I do own one. It is on the desk in front of me right now. It is 65 mm cube and is crystal clear. Inside are cent through half dollar from the year my son was born. I believe the coins were taken from a mint set. I didn't pay $70 for it. I recall paying something like $12 for it. I didn't buy it because the coins were MS69. I bought it because I liked it. I still like it. Maybe I'll take a picture for you all.
I say "get over it". Beauty (and value) is in the eye of the beholder. If I want to list a 1983 cent thats been run over by the president's motorcade for $1000, that's my choice. Nobody may ever buy it but what ever...
For the life of me, I cannot recall ever in my 38 years, where I said to myself "Dang, I really wish I had a paperweight right now". lol I tend to do all my paperworking indoors.
I think this is neat. Sorry it ruined the coins. I didn't do it myself but I guess I'm guilty for buying it.
