I recently won a box of over 200 proof cents from 1952 through 2004 and while getting them all organized I decided to peek at the 1970-S coins ( since there are some many mint varieties ). Look at what I found !! I am 99% sure that this is what it is: 1970S-1DO-003P | CLASS 3 (EDS) CONECA: PR-3-O-III | Crawford:CDDO-007 Wexler: WDDO-003 | FS#:1C-030 coin photographed is credited to A. Penner. A fantastic and unique spread shows as a large date hubbing over a small date hubbing. Extra thickness in varying degrees shows all over the obverse.
Because I think I have seen about 200 DD pennies in my lifetime just not cared enough to try to look Oh BTW how do you look at them?
First I look with my eyes for anything that seems odd. Then I look through 3x magnifying glass. Then I look through 10x magnifying glass. Then I look through 10x power microscope. What does "IRL" mean ?
Kanga, What caught your eye first? The "1" or the "7". I have the utmost respect for you guys that find these variety coins. It takes a level of patience that I just don't have. Congratulations and don't fret, it is easy to see In Real Life and in your photos. I think John Doe is a little knew to varieties and doesn't really know what to look for. Maybe you can mentor him! Paul
Thanks, The tails of the 9 and the 7 caught my naked eye because they were too thick and then the separations at each tail became more clear under the magnifying glass. What helped most in spotting this was that I was already in the process of looking at other proof 1970-S cents that all looked normal , so that made this coin jump out at me. I then visited coppercoins.com and found the best match to my coin. I noticed at their website that the letters in the motto was also oddly shaped compared to normal proofs. I was able to confirm the same odd shaped motto letters on my coin as well. So basically it is having normal "like coins" handy for comparison.
Very nice find. I too, don't have the patience to look through all my coins, even though I should. My pile of unsearched coins grows daily. I promise one day, I'll look through them all :foot-mouth:. Bruce
IRL in real life i think. its a pretty neat find. alot of the errors that make coins extremely valueble seem pointless to me but this is a real error and i like it.
a different proof 1970-S This is a different 1970-S Proof from this same box I am organizing. Does it look like anything special to anyone ?
Nice and thanks for those pointers. These pics aren't bad at all either. How'd you get such good shots?
If I had a better camera I could get some photos I'd be proud of , instead of shooting close-ups with my webcam through the eye-piece of a microscope
