I was thinking it would probably have a better chance of upgrade cracked out. Some risk there if it does come back lower or body bagged for some reason. More and more I like coinman's idea of stopping by a coin dealer and see what he thinks. I will let you all know when I get some more info.
Oh I forgot your in Dallas. There is a dealer right off the toll road and Forest Lane , two actually within 2 miles of each other. One is dallas Gold and Silver and I have to dig out the other dealers name . I'll get back with you on that as soon as I can locate his name. Both are very reputable dealers from my own personal experiences with them.
Leadfoot's question would be my biggest concern as well. I would really have to know a dealer very well before having them make that call.
That is a good question. I usually go to a shop in Arlington. Trying to avoid that area right now. Have to drive by the Death Star (Texas Stadium) with all the Super Bowl stuff going on.
Me too. Total arm chair guy. Skip the stadium and the crowds. Doin' a little "arm chair" right now. Got Duke/MD hoops on in the background.....
There's another point to consider regarding cracking it out, and it's one that many forget. If you ever go to sell that coin (in the holder it is in) anyone who knows coins is going to look at it basically the same way I did. That alone will often bring even more money than if the coin were in an upgraded holder. People love to gamble. And a coin that looks to have a good shot at being upgraded is one of their favorite things to gamble on Again, I'd leave it and resubmit. You really have nothing to lose by doing so.
Thanks Doug. I actually got you partly to thank for this coin. I saw a post you did a few years ago about how good the grading was in this old ANA holders. I started searching Ebay for coins in these holders and this one came up. Lucky to snag it for about $180 bucks. You made up my mind. I will keep it in the holder and try for the upgrade. If not I still have it in the ANA holder. Will be interesting to see what PCGS thinks. Thanks again for all your help over the years.
Flyers, I can refer you to either Dallas Rare Coins LTD or Ed Hipps Rare Coins. Ed , is a very old friend and a well respected Collector & Dealer . Either of these two I feel very comfortable in referring you . Let us know how you make out. Thanks.
Thanks for the info. I didn't get to make it to any coin dealers. I just sent my coin submission to PCGS and kept this coin in the holder for a crossover. Should know in a few weeks. Wish me luck. Thanks for everyones advise.
Unreal. Just checked online for the status of my order. This coin did not crossover. What a waste of money. Still can't believe it didn't even crossover as MS65PL. NGC now gets all my business.
You should allow the coin to remain in the older holder. Older TPGs holders are sought after by certain enthusiasts and can actually bring a higher premium when sold. The coin is spectacular! It exudes proof like qualities and in my opinion is borderline DMPL from what I can see in the photographs! The only reason I could see submitting it to a TPG would be to try for the DMPL grade or for an upgrade to 66. In the olden days many coins were under graded by the TPGs out of fear of blowing the top off of the market.
Thanks. I did submit it to PCGS for a crossover grade thinking it would possibly get an upgrade to MS66. PCGS didn't even cross it over to the original grade of MS65PL. Why I have no idea but I know I will never submit any coins to them again in the future. I will stick with NGC and will enjoy my 1884-O Morgan in the old ANA holder.
PCGS has always been a lot harsher than ANACS and NGC on PL/DMPL Morgans, IMO they are very harsh. http://coins.ha.com/common/search_r...les&Ne=16&N=51+790+231+382+73&Ntt=1885 O Deep That's one of the reasons they often bring a premium (Of course there are exceptions) but DMPL PCGS Morgans usually bring more money than NGC and ANACS.
