Hey guys I just joined the forum. I've been collecting coins for about 12 years now, though I'm only 19.

I've been recently reading about US Mint Sets and from what I've found, they have been sold officially through the US Mint from 1947 to date, with a few years as exceptions. My question is - first, how do you know if a set is one that was sold officially from the mint as a set, or one that someone has put together? and second, what about mint sets online pre-dating 1947?

    Thanks

Welcome, I'm also 19 so i know where you're coming from CT is a great place to learn.

As far as the mint sets before 1947 there were no "official" sets made but you could buy UNC coins from the mint and some employees made there own creations for there own personal gain.

This is what the Mint Sets from 1947 through 1958 looked like. This one was from 1949.

First of all, welcome to Cointalk! And, welcome to the collecting of mint sets. There aren't that many of us out there.
I don't think you have much to worry about buying a home made set after 1958, as the demand for them is ultra low right now. But, if you are hoping to obtain the '82 and '83 sets sold at the mint gift shops, you may have some issues with people assembling sets and selling them on ebay. As for the pre-1947s, you are exclusively dealing with post mint assembled sets, which do not carry a premium over the coins individually.
