2011 "Army" Coins

Did anyone get the brochure from the U.S. Mint about the "Army" coins? I think it would be better if they were .9999% gold, instead of 90%. I may order one anyway. What does everyone else think?

I don't think I can justify paying $400-500 for a coin with less than $150 dollars worth of gold in it that is a US modern commemorative. I can get 3 AGE 1/10 for that.

 

I'm gonna try and get at least one of the gold issues. It'll probably be the uncirculated. Time was when I'd spring for both the proof and the uncirculated but I really can't justify the cost with so many other thing I'd like to purchase.

 

The gold coins are 1/4 oz with 90% gold I think. I think it has a little over $300 worth of gold in it.

 

I'll be getting one just because I'm going to make a nice display with my awards and name tags in it since i served.

That's a cool idea. I can't believe it took them so long to make a commerative coin for the Army.

 

for $5.00 commemorative gold coin at $449.95 each. you have to wait the gold price go up to $1,860.30 per ounce in order to equal its bullion value. currently gold close at $1,339.60 an ounce. need gold to go up 39% to reach $1,860.30.

for $1.00 commemorative silver coin at $54.95 each. you have to wait the silver price go up to $71.05 per ounce in order to equal its bullion value. currently silver close at $28.03 an ounce. need silver to go up 154% to reach $71.05.

in short. i will not buy modern commemorative gold or silver coins. at these current level of gold ($1,339.60) and silver ($28.03). i am already scarce to death.

apmex buying modern commemorative dollar at $21.14 ( minimum $1,000.00 and up) and selling at $25.17 each. buy 500 pc or more at $23.67 each. u.s. mint price is $54.95 within one month period and $59.95 afterward.

 

I really like the reverse of the gold 5 dollar but being an AF vet and on a budget, I'll have to wait till they do one for the force. Who knows when that will be, given the Air Force is only 63 years old and the mint has not even done a bronze medal yet. I'm tellin ya, we get no respect!

Did I mistakenly stumble into the "bullion" forum? Just checked, it's the US coins forum. OK, then ya gotta throw them PM spot prices out the window. Collectors will collect for collecting sake and not in regard to PM's. Well, at least I do. Sure the dang things are expensive. The mint is charging a tremendous premium over spot, but as a collector I will buy one. I could wait, and pick one up in the aftermarket, but that's not what this collector does. Stupid money? Maybe, but I don't let spot prices get in the way of my collecting.

 

I do not view these as bullion so if I like the design and/or the cause I will usually buy them, at least the silver version anyway. TC

 

For a numismatic site, there is too much emphasis on bullion here for me.

 

I have to agree. It was not designed to compete with the AGE, it is designed to be put into collections, possibly aimed at veterans. If you want bullion, buy bullion. If you are too cheap to buy the gold version, there is always the silver one. If you're really down and out, they even make a clad version. But, the premium over melt is really high on that one!!!

I'll probably get the gold and the "Modern Service" Dollar. If only they could pair the gold obverse and "Modern Service" dollar reverse. Now that'd be a nice coin!

Of the two $5 gold Army commemorative coins, which do you think will sell more (proof at $449.95/$454.95 or uncirculated at $439.95/$444.95)? The maximum total mintage for the gold issues is 100,000. Give a guess of the final mintage for the proof and the uncirculated gold. TC
