i have a redbook but when it comes to color, i don't know how to grade..
i see "Red" pennies that are only VF and "Brown" pennies that are MS +
    :mad::mad::mad:

Thanks for any input, this will help me determine other grades as well!

You will never see "red" pennies in VF unless they have been cleaned. I doubt you will see any "red" on any cent less than AU or at least AU details.

I would call your coin AU55 details, but corroded. Probably net XF.

nice coin for an album, what a shame on the reverse. Looks like it might have been sitting in a steel desk drawer for 50 years or something.

I might go a little higher than rlm on that obverse, the fold of lincolns ear are crisp - maybe a little grease in the die in the center of Lincolns beard?

is an MS65 red worth considerably more than a MS65 brown?
i didnt even notice the reverse had that until i shot it through the loupe.. it looks A+ in hand..

thanks for the replies so far

    1916-D MS-65
    Br- $416

It is entirely possible that the TPG could ignore those rubs, but I doubt they would with that rim ding.

In answer to your question about red versus brown, it depends on you definition of "considerably". The red is twice as valuable as the brown S VDB, but 50 times for the 26-S. I am pretty sure those are the extremes and the rest fall somewhere in the middle.

AU-53, I see no corrosion but the surfaces are suspect and the coin wouldn't grade. The reverse spots appear to be copper formate from an old cleaning or from sitting in a Whitman folder for a long time.

i'll post a pic to confirm this.. i looked again last night - doesnt look corroded at all. maybe the light playing tricks. it looks more dirty/stained but not actually pot marked.

AU-50 bumped down because of the spots on the reverse. Im guessing it doesn't look as bad in hand as it does in the photos.

I have to take a second and gloat. :)

Can I get some points added to that contest? My semi-educated guess has to be worth something!

Might sound corny - but this means a lot more to me than guess a grade of coin already in the slab.

Carboni7 - Thank you very very much for stopping back in and posting!
