I just came across this on eBay: 1909 S $10 GOLD INDIAN EAGLE ANACS AG3 SAN FRANCISCO,CA AG03? Yep. I had no idea American gold ever circulated that much. (Actually, I guess I've seen some pretty worn $1 and $2.50 pieces, but never quite this slick.) Anybody else have some interesting lowball examples?
I would guess that was somebody's pocket piece for a long time. It is a good candidate for a low grade registry set.
Nice find to start the thread jeffB! I have a soft spot for the worn and tattered numismatic pieces myself. So many strive for coins and notes in high grades, but the under appreciated beauty in worn coins, those of once noble regard, are in and of themselves, quite beautiful and collectible as well.
one of my favorite coins is a VG8 1865 Indian cent that is 40% off center. It sure circulated a long time ...
I hear you Chris; couldn't agree more. There's something special about an old note or coin that gives it special character. I guess because it's fulfilled it's role in commerce, and is ready to settle down in someone's collection and be pampered. Bruce
Yeah Hobo, a lot of these heavily worn coins were used as pocket pieces. I agree with you, but whatever its history its sure served its time. Bruce
I don't have it any more, but the first US gold coin I ever bought was an 1852 quarter eagle in VG condition, back in 1972 for the princely sum of $52.
