I've been collecting for most of my life. And I have been on the Coin Talk site for over 5 years. I never knew about the reject bin of a Coin Star until I came to this site. Today I found my first coins in a Coin Star reject bin. A modern Dime, several modern cents and a very nice 1928 Wheat Cent.
How about that. I never paid a Coinstar machine any attention at all.... Don't those machines make a jing-a-ling noise when it sends change to the reject bin?
They do, but it tends to be drowned out by the racket of coins going through the sorter. And some people are really inattentive. (Heck, I'm inattentive a lot of the time -- just not when it comes to jingling-coin noises.)
I have to look at my collection. This 1928 may be better than the ones I was seeing in change back in the 50's.
That is a darned nice wheatie..... Reminds me of checking all the pay phones back when I delivered newspapers. If I happened to find a dime in one, I was halfway to a soda-pop!
That WAS a soda pop for me and included the 2 cent deposit. But I was more inclined to gather another 2 cents and get a comic book for 12 cents.
I just went to my collection of Wheat Cents. These were the best I could find in circulation. As I guessed, I think the one that has been in my book since the 50's is not as good as the one I found today in Coinstar. That means it is the best 1928 I have had my hands on. Comments.
Cool. The only thing I've ever found in a Coinstar was a washer. Oddly, I don't think a copper cent should have been rejected (but of course machines don't always work 100%). Nice find!
