    the bottom one is an Elizabeth the first penny guilded at the mint

    That first coin is gorgeous. Beautiful design in the center of the reverse.

    I know little of English coins of this time period, could you tell me what you mean when you say that it was ' guilded at the mint ' ?

    gold plated so they could be given away a bit like maundy money

    Ah, I see, interesting. I am familiar with the Maundy coins, they are some of my favorite British coins to collect.
    So this Elizabeth I penny was not gold-plated in an effort to pass it off as an actual gold coin then?

    no its far smaller than any gold coin in circulation at that time its less than 1/2 " across

    Ah I see, nice... sorry, I should have known that. My British coin collection starts with Charles II, at least that is the oldest British coin I have.
    I have always like small coins like that, which is why I so enjoyed collecting Maundy coins for so long.
