I for the world can figurer this one out, but by the looks of it I might have a Type 2 1981 set??? One things for sure they all look the same, and I remember reading somewhere that was a key to look out for... What say you?
5 of the 6 we agree on, but are you are that that half is type 2? Those two are rough to distinguish, but that half sure looks like a type 1 to me.
i would have to agree ... the pic is kinda small take a look at this drawing, I'm not sure where i got it from but i keep it for reference. it might help
from what I see (and I have looked at more than a small share of 1981 Type II Proof Sets) they are ALL type 1. The serifs on all of the S mintmarks are all the same. There is no bulbous upper loop in the S which will be a different size than the lower loop. While one or two may be clearer than others, they are all Type 1
Mike, I think you have your 79's mixed up with your 81's. The "bulbous upper loop" are nearly identical in 1981. See either Snowman's reference or http://lincolncentresource.com/San_Fransisco_Mintmark_Styles.html
maybe I am not saying it well. The Upper Loop on an 81 Type II is larger in size than the bottom loop. These are all type Is. There are few things in the coin world that I am sure of, but these mint marks are clearly 1981 Type I. It's not even close.
The bottom serif looks bulbous to me. If you think of the bottom serif only - at about 9 o'clock there is a light reflection, but that is still part of the serif. And bulbous bottom serif is the definitive marker. Thus it's a type 2.
While I understand what you are saying about the upper loops Mike, using those loops as the diagnostic is somewhat subjective. However, using the bottom serif as the diagnostic removes that subjectivity. There is no mistaking the straight edge vs the bulbous end.
compare any of those mint marks to the one on this cent. None of those mint marks look like this one:
What a response!!! I really wish I could use my DSLR but I don't think I can get it this close. Right now I'm using an old Canon with macro filter on the front. I'll try to get some better photo's, and maybe get the lens apart cause thats keeping me from getting a little better photo...
You are doing fine with your pictures. It is the lighting that give me problems on the half. The glare is right where I need to see. All you need do is change teh angle a bit.
then, respectfully, we disagree. I submit that all of the mint marks in that proof set match and that they are ALL Type I. I wonder if we'll find out for sure. Here's something that you can try ronterry. Compare these mint marks with mint marks from the proof sets of 1980 and 1982. The Type II mint mark will be the same as a 1982. The Type I will be the same as the 1980. Compare them in hand and let us know what you think.
Well not to revive an old thread, but that is what I am doing because I just bought a set.....The Dollar is not, neither is the dime which is odd because I can not find any information on the dime anyway. Anyhow here are the pictures I have of what I bought. It appears the penny is the one worth the monies.. I am pleased as I would like a set. I went through my sets from 1981 that my dad brought and none of these match...so this one is now my best. Thoughts? How much do you think they are worth?
