Ok, so i was thinking about maybe looking into buying some more slabbed morgans in the not too distant future. Im gonna work on first getting the 1882 set complete, then maybe picking up some others. Im gonna gun after a 1882CC first, cause its 2nd most expensive, then get the 1882P and S seince they can be had a bit cheaper. Then there's the O/S, that one is the most expensive, and may have to wait for a little while. Should i Ebay it, or check out some other sites, or hit some coin shops in my area. I've been looking around a bit, any ideas to help me along? BTW, im not rich by any means, so the best deals would play in my favor.

Buy the coin, not the slab.

Point....i guess 1882 didn't get much counterfit action?? I want all my coins to be genuine....and a graded coin is just that...but i get your point hobo....

Just to clarify, don't treat slabbed coins as commodities. Not all MS-64s are the same. If coins were graded to one decimal place some 64s would grade 64.1 and others would grade 64.9. The 64.9 coin may be priced higher than the 64.1 coin for a very good reason. (It is a nicer coin.) Be selective and try to find those 64.9s that are priced the same as the 64.5s and 64.1s.

I have never heard a collector say he looked at too many coins before purchasing one.

However, I have heard more than a few say they wished they had looked at more.

I would look EVERYWHERE for your coins. See as many as you possibly can in-hand before making a decision.

The most important thing about a collection isn't the grade it's if you like the coin or not, I've seen many a 65 Morgan that didn't look as good as a 64! IF you're happy with the coin you'll enjoy it more.

The 1882 O/S is not a requirement for a complete date set. For example, if you look in a Dansco album for Morgans, there is no slot for one.

I realized a long time ago that I would never be able to complete a set of Morgans in my preferred grades, MS63 - MS67. I also realized that I wouldn't want one of each of the 3000+ VAM's. Some of them are a little ridiculous, anyway. However, there are certain dates/mintmarks that are affordable enough that I can build a set of the five grades MS63 - MS67, and there are certain VAM progressions, like the 1882-CC VAM-2 series & VAM-3 series that are within reach.

The point is, that you don't have to go by the book or what some album says that you need. Make up your own set of rules. It's your money, isn't it?

    Good point...

    I wasn't thinking...O/S is an error....guess i don't absolutely need that one.

Im gonna look everywhere i can!

Never thought about this either...good way to look at it!

These are great replies huh GT! I just bought an '82-S for my collection a few weeks ago, but I only deal with raw Morgan's no Dansco. I haven't decided on weather I want to start an album with these or not. For now I just keep mine in Air-Tites, and I will probably just make a nice wood case to keep all my Morgan air-tites in.
Another thing to consider especially with 'S' is PL's. Not sure if those would be singled out by non-collectors. I basically mean if you have one PL on a page, I guarantee anyone that looks at that page will not even notice the others(High Dollar CC's). Could be good or bad? Say you don't want to drop the big money on a MS Carson City, so BAM drop a PL a few coins away and no one will ever notice it LOL...

Technically it is a variety, not an error. (Unlike an error, every coin struck by that die has the save O/S.)

    Gotcha Hobo.

Now this is for everyone. I was checking out GSA's 1882 CC's. They got some that aren't graded but are in govt holders real decent priced.. Im gonna guess seince they are advertised on this site, they are a good place to buy CC's from???

If they're MS62 or even borderline MS63, you should examine them carefully to make sure you will like them. Some 62's look really bad. You know what they say....."If you don't like it at first, chances are you never will."

Thanks Chris, but would a place like that refund or switch me out if i don't like the original purchase? Thats why i hate buying online.....gurr.... but sometimes the prices are better for an equal quality product than a dealer or shop will give me.... Ebay's prices on 1882 CC morgans are stupid high...i just looked.

Apmex has an 1882-CC GSA graded NGC MS64 for $259.99. http://www.apmex.com/Category/402/GSA_Carson_City_Silver_Dollars.aspx

I was just at a small local coin show today, and I was looking at some GSA's one dealer had. I was particularly interested in 82-CC's because I'm looking for additional specimens in the VAM-2 & VAM-3 series. HE WANTED $400 FOR AN NGC MS-64! Have a nice day!

Let me say I don't like Morgan dollars. Now that being said I
    did a set by mint-P, CC, D, O,S then I added O/CC,O/O,O/S,S/S.
Then I started with some toned, PL so now I 24 of these things.
I didnt get any off the bay, they range from AU53 to MS64
I used Heritage,Norteastcoin.com, and Teletrade. Hope this helps.
