In general, what is the least expensive date of Carson City Morgans? I really want a CC but have to mind the budget. As far as I can tell, maybe 1878? Thanks for your help.
What grade(s) are you looking at? Do you care if the coin is in a GSA (government) holder or not? For uncirculated GSA coins, the most common and least expensive are the 1882 CC, 83 CC, 84 CC. These retail for about $190. For circulated grades, there are some more dates to the list, including the 1878 CC. For no-problem coins, the $70 range might be retail for a VG to F coin. For circulated coins with minor problems, such as a light cleaning, a person might find examples for $50 or so. Coins with major problems such a significant scratch, polishing, scrubbing, might be found for less, sometimes close to melt value, if money is the major stumbling block.
You can get MS63 DMPL CC's for 300ish from 83 if you have lots of patience. 1882-1884 are by far the cheapest years for mint state examples.
Be aware that the GSA - CC's advertised for $180 by APMEX are not graded, do not come with the box or COA and are coins of their choice. Most often, you will find these in very low MS grades. Otherwise, they would have been submitted for grading. They do have an 1882-CC NGC MS64 for $260, and that is a pretty good price for what is generally a decent grade for a nice looking coin. I would rather see you spend $80 more than buy a coin that you might not be happy to own. Chris
My advice is DO NOT buy a problem coin. But the nicest example you can afford. I personally like to examine in person any coin purchase over $100. Buying UNCs on the internet is not a good idea; I speak from experience.
Eh, if you buy from a dealer that has a good reputation and has great pictures, there isn't much of an issue with buying coins online regardless of their grade.
I have to agree with you, but if you haven't heard any testimonies, here is probably the place to find out. I know of one I would avoid, but others may have had good experiences with. My point is $100 is a decent chunk of change for me, and I personally like to examine it myself.
My point is $100 is a decent chunk of change for me, and I personally like to examine it myself. Oh Yeah! My highest online purchase for an individual coin on line was my 1884-CC in its GSA holder, Box, and US Mint certificate of authenticity! I pretty much new what I was getting. Steve
