Looking at one of my extra sets I think I have a 39s rev 38, I haven't looked at a whole lot of those so I want to be sure. The steps are so weak hard to tell, but I usually look for the verticle sharp cut at each end of the steps, don't see anything but it could just be weak, also, what do you think it will hit. Never mind what looks like a break in the luster on the hair it is just some haze.
Well, it looks like the rev. of 38 but I cannot tell for certain, too much glare and not quite close enough to be 100% sure. Is that a carbon spot (or likeness) over the E in MONTICELLO?
Your photos are too small and lacking in detail to make a definitive determination. Here are photos of both reverses. Reverse of 38 Reverse of 40 Please compare your coin to the photos above and you tell us which one it is.
thanks, I saw those pics before but still wasn't sure. here you go, it still looks like a 38 to me, but it is so mushy I don't feel 100% I was wondering about the different lettering the descriptions mentioned, they both look the same to me.
Byron, Based on the top step in your photo, I am going to say it is Reverse of 38. The top step on the Reverse of 40 is bold and thicker than that of the Reverse of 38. Normally, one would be able to make the determination simply by looking at the steps, but in this photo, the steps are incomplete which all but destroys the wavy characteristics of the 38. In addition, the left end of the steps with indistinct starts looks like 38, but the right hand side appears to have the indentation that is found on the reverse of 40.
Thanks, That was the same problem I was having looking at it, I even had it side by side with my 38 and wasn't sure. Kept going back and forth. I know the S is the most common reverse of 38 so I don't know if it is worth sending in, Im also worried about how the spot is going to be hit especially since it is so close to the center.
