I don't metal detect myself (wish I had the time!), but when I was working in Hampton, VA. I ran into a group of guys at a bar that were into medal detecting HEAVY. They all worked for VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation) and were somehow connected to the groups that widened roads in the area. They would get into the sites after hours and medal detect.

They showed me some of the things they found...the most common finds were civil war ammunition; boxes of the stuff that was either buried or left behind. Everything else has since decayed, but the unfired lead bullets/balls remain.

Their most prized finds were uniform buttons. They had a bunch of those. They showed me a rare Massachusetts Militia button they said was worth $400.

I asked if they found any coins. That's when one of the guys pulls out an 1807 Capped Bust dime, which (imo) was EF45. WOW! He just had it in his wallet.

When it became apparent he wouldn't trade it for a round of drinks, I strongly suggested he take better care of it and submit it for certification. He's probably still carrying it around in his wallet!

Good luck with the ACE. Be sure and let us know if you find any thing good. I just bought a new coil for my ace and can't wait for spring so I can get out and hunt.

Well I have gone 2 times w/o much time to hunt. In my mom's property is a slab where old restaurant/cafe is located. Got a little time there with my young nephew and this is the only keeper item we found.

I have no idea what this button is off of, or what the writing says around the edges. Thought I would share this find, but no coins yet. I was hoping to find some lost money since alcohol/moonshine used to be sold out of the building back in the day.

This item goes to my nephew since he was working the detector and I was digging. Hopefully we can get another detector working the property.

I`m knee deep in buried treasure in my part of the world, a guy found an Iron Age sword in the fields just acrooss the road a couple of years back.
I`ve found coins, cannon balls, tracer shells (live) a Gin Trap, keys.

The item pictured below is a First Century Celtic Pommel from a dagger, I found it about 200 meters from my house its made of lead with an iron neck.
Apparently lead changes to a bone or ivory colour when it has been buried for long periods .

Here's one of my favorite "treasure" sites from Great Britain. These guys are extreme hunters. Be prepared to be overwhelmed by their finds. There are pages and pages, and each are filled with every kind of treasure imaginable! They actually have two sites. Check them both out.

    Here's the first.

This past week I've been trying to make it out for at least an hour or so after school. Where I'm at there was an old cabin in the late 18th century, and I'm also bout 100 yards off of the Forbes Trail. I haven't been finding much, just 2 horseshoes, some nails(some were HUGE) and a belt buckle. I actully broke most of the smaller stuff it was so rusty.

I'm here for ya Cheetah! ;)

Another place metal-detecting friends tell me is good (if you live in New England) is out in the woods, along old stone walls.

150-250 years ago, Connecticut was 80% cleared farmland. There was so much granite near the surface that it had to be dug up. The farmers didn't have any place to put it so they used it to make stone walls to separate the fields.

Today, Connecticut is 80% forested. Those stone walls are still there, but they're out in the woods. Back in the day, coins would fall out of people's pockets as they climbed over the walls. Also, the walls made good landmarks...good places to bury things...like a tin box full of coins.

I've heard stories of some pretty nice finds by folks willing to take a 10 mile hike in the woods with their equipment. :thumb:
