Which Series Next?

Well, I've been saving my coin budget for the past couple months (and will continue for this month and next) so that I can have quite the time at the Indy coin show in mid February. I only have 6 more left for my Franklin set which I am hopeful I can find at the show, then it's on to upgrading. So, if everything goes accordingly, I'll have a little extra to start a new series. The big question: which one? I've narrowed it down to three and can't quite decide:

1.) Lincoln cents-the Woody thread and Guess the Grade thread has really turned me back into this series I started as a kid. I thought about putting an eclectic collection together of woodies, reds, browns, etc. Plus, the new shield cent is awesome! I'm just not sure about all the varieties. Second issue I foresee is that these will be too easy to collect after the 1930’s. I want a little bit of a challenge.

2.) Morgans-Here is a challenge! Again, the Post a Morgan thread made me think, "Wow, beautiful coins." I would love to put together a circulated set, say in F-VF. Price may be an issue with some years though. Do I really want to collect something that may have so many unfilled holes...things to consider.

    3. Washington Quarters-I don’t have any in my collection. I really don’t know why. There have been worse eagles on coins. It does have some symbolism and is relatively inexpensive. I don’t like the state quarter idea…collecting p, d, s of every state/national park quarter can become old…really quick.

I know to which of the three I’m leaning to at the moment. In all honesty, I’ll probably not start any series as I don’t know how to properly and consistently grade any of them. Still…six coins away and I’ll need something to fill the coin crazed mind. Thoughts, opinions?

Why not the American Silver Eagle 1986- no real stoppers except if you want a 2008W rev 2007.

In lieu of Morgans, due to the expense... Peace dollars? Still can be somewhat pricey, but nowhere near as much so as the Morgans to put a set together in MS.

I guess of the three you have listed, I'd choose the Washintons. It's a rather large series with the state quarters and now the National Parks, but you can assemble the series in nicer grades for a pretty decent price. I guess I'm just wondering if you'd consider Walking Liberty Halves. It's a beautiful coin, and many dates can be purchased for very reasonable also. I'm currently working on that series, and am waiting for a nice 1938-D to come into my possession soon.

Personally I would try to put together a currency series . Ok, Ok, coin thread. I would probably pick the Lincoln cents. I would choose those because you can find so many in circulation that you will quickly have something accomplished. I know that most will just be hole fillers until you upgrade but it makes searching pocket change a bit more fun. The cost and availability would also be a big plus, very few high dollar coins and you could find most coins at any main show.

Don't get me wrong, the Peace Dollar is a beautiful coin, but my only reservation is the grading. They are notoriously difficult to grade in the AU to MS regions with weak strikes. I remember becoming extremely frustrated, even to some extent currently, at grading Franklins because of these same characteristics. I was just hoping for something a little easier to grade. Still...Peace Dollars is an option outside of Morgans and something I'll consider.

Yeah, Peace dollars are tough to grade. Walking Lib Halves aren't a bad idea either, or Mercury Dimes are even better... but I'm a bit biased.

lol...My Mercs and Roosies are completed. (Hence the name) :) As for the Walking Liberty I'm saving those for after college when I can afford them in an XF/AU grade.

I am now working on the Washington's. Finished the Jeff's, close on the Rosie's, close on the Lincolns except for a few Keys and the Morgan's is on the back burner due to the silver prices, which effect the Washington's, but not as much because of the melt value. IMO I want to get the legacy sets finished and then I will go after older series.

After college? LOL I am done college and I have nothing in the way of cash to spend on coins.

In that case, I'd go with either Peace dollars or Lincoln cents... but I like MS sets, all in the same grade... with hugely fluctuating mintage and value numbers, the Wheat cents are kinda hard to do that with unless you want some lower level coins in your set for the later years.

Although lincolns are my favorite, it would be hard for me to recommend them as they have really $ risen $ in the past 5 years or so.....
assuming AU-to low BU coins, you can probably collect morgans just as cheaply and at least have the silver value as a stop loss for the investment, where lincolns have further to 'potentially fall' imo.

So, to pick from you list, I'd have to go with #2... quarters are still peak'ish too imo due to the increased popularity imparted by the state qtrs....

If it were more open ended of a question, I'd probably say Franky halves or Jefferson nick's,, those appears to be somewhat asleep right now, except for those top pop's......

Actually I change my vote, I say go for Barber dimes. It seems like that is your favorite series so I would continue it.

I would go Statehood silver proofs! It took only 18 months or so to assemble (100% via the internet), and you have Silver bullion to boot! ;)

IMO, Washington Quarters are the most difficult series to grade in the 20th century.

I'm personally partial to my current working set, 2 cent pieces. I think my next after that will be 3 cent nickels. I love the oddball types!!!

How about these? Morgan Dollar Date Set, 20th Century Type Set. Both are very do-able and fun!

What were you paying for those silver proofs (ball parkish)? I am now going to start getting those as well as the earlier Washingtons (year 32+)

I would suggest a Dansco 7070 Type Set. It is a ton of fun and by far my "educational" project. Will cost you a little bit of money even if you go with G/VG coins (I am estimating that my F/F+ set is going to end up costing me about $2.5K to 3K.)

As you work that, you may just fall in love with one of those series you haven't thought of. Then that is the follow-on project for you.
