I picked up some odds and ends at the show today. In addition to a few pieces of foreign paper and one ancient coin, I also bought these: 1850 Upper Canada One Penny Token: 1906 Great Britain Penny Counterstruck - Obverse "HH"; Reverse "JS": 1899 Canada Ten Cents Counterstruck - Obverse "7": 1913 Indian Princely States Gwalior 1/4 Anna: 1813 Sheffield Roscoe Place One Penny Token:
will be going to the york coin fair at the nd of the month, hopefully i will be able to find some more nice celtic coins for my collection.
The show I attend is small, maybe 4 coin dealers and 3 stamp dealers. I keep going because you never know what's going to show up there. I missed a very nice 1904 Bank of Montreal $20 note by a couple of minutes because I hesitated and the very next shopper bought it immediately. Oh well.... Next time I'll make sure I have it in hand. Good luck at your show!
I've been pretty lucky with these. I have three that are really nice. I don't go looking for them but when I come across them looking like this, I pick them up.
Interesting counterstrikes, I have a few on US Large Cents, one on an 1822 Large Cent stamped with an incuse ' H . N ' on the obverse, the period between the letters is stamped on the coin as well. Don't have a clue as to what it means. Yeah I really like that Indian States one as well, great portrait, and very nice detail on the coat of arms on the reverse. I also think that first Canadian Bank Token is absolutely gorgeous! Great additions ikan. I have also always liked that quote in your signature, about the small print.
Thanks for the comments, Rexesq! It's interesting that the countertruck coins are either treated as trash and wind up in the bargain bins or they're treated like gold and are priced high. I know of one dealer that has pennies and dimes that are counterstruck and they start at $15 each and most are just initials, nothing fancy. The bank tokens are just a nice find. I really like them in the higher grades....so much more detail. My signature is courtesy of Tom Waits.
It is interesting about the countstruck coins. That Bank Token is definitely one to be proud of... High grade indeed. I always loved the design. You seem to collect alot of different types of coins from different periods and places.... I do a bit of that myself.... Here is my US 1822 Large Cent 'H . N.' countermark coin, the incuse mark is upside down because I wanted the coin to be right side up....
That's neat! I have this old King George III that I found on the riverbank quite a few years ago. Most of the detail is gone (the reverse is smooth) but you can still make out some of the counterstrike. I've researched it at the archives without any conclusive results.
Wow ikan, that is a cool thing to find.... on the riverbank too, wow..... You can still see part of ol' King George III's head, making it attributable to a coin of him at least. Pretty cool.
since i have just spent £1,785 on an edward VII proof set then i think my funds at york will be somewhat liited.
